There is a lot to do in Tenerife, but in addition to the popular whale watching tours, water sports activities and great Tenerife bus tours, the island is also known for its beautiful botanical gardens. If you haven’t been to any of the botanical gardens in Tenerife, this is something you should definitely do during your visit to the island. Down below, we’ve listed some of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Tenerife.

Jardín Botánico

It’s a garden with a special collection of native plants, as well a large collection of tropical and subtropical plants that perfectly adapt to the climate of our island! This botanical garden, located in Puerto de la Cruz, the north of Tenerife, is one of the most beautiful gardens in Tenerife. The garden was founded back in 1788. Although its official name is ‘’La Orotava Acclimatization Garden’’, it is popularly known as the Botanical Garden of Puerto de la Cruz. It got its name because of the fact that in the past Puerto de la Cruz belonged to the municipality of La Orotava. It’s a very peaceful place to walk around and definitely worth the visit!

• People usually spend around 2-3 hours here. At the entrance of the park, you’ll be provided with a map that identifies where the rare plants are located.

The Orchid Garden Sitio Litre

If you have never visited Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island then this is a recommended stop. Here you can find the largest collection of orchids on the island and the largest and oldest dragon tree in Puerto de la Cruz. It is known to be over 300 years old. You don’t have to be a plant lover to fall in love with this English style garden – it’s truly memorable.

Santa Cruz Palmetum

The Palmetum is located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on an extensive hill in the metropolitan area of the island. With around 2-hectare, this gorgeous place is forming a magnificent botanical garden which is the biggest green area in Santa Cruz de Tenerife as well being home to the best collection of palm trees in Europe. It’s really impressive how this place was once a rubbish dump but has been transformed into a beautiful park! In the park, you’ll get a guide map that gives excellent information in your own language. In some of the places, you’re able to enjoy the great views of the coast and the town as well!

Parque del Drago

This is the main attraction of Icod de Los Vinos – a small municipality in the North of Tenerife. Here you can find one of the oldest Dragon trees. The Dragon tree is believed to be over 800 years old and is an under-protected species. Drago Milenario got its name for its iconic red juice that is said to be the dried blood of dragons and has healing abilities. It’s a historical symbol of the Canary Islands, measuring more than 16 meters high and has a base of about 20 meters. Hijuela del Botánico

Hijuela del Botánico, also well known as ‘’La Hijuela’’, is a beautiful botanical garden in Tenerife with an area of 3390 square meters. It can be found behind the building of the City Council of La Orotava. The botanical garden was created back in 1788 and has found its cultural interest since 2008. You can not miss the pleasure of walking among the hundred species that gather here. It’s a very quiet and peaceful environment where you can take your time to enjoy the beauty of nature! It’s a park with a lot of different species such as trees, plants, flowers and butterflies from different parts of the world.

Taoro Park

Located in Puerto de la Cruz, the north of Tenerife. The park was covered to be found about one hundred thousand square meters. Divided into several areas, we’ve got Los Jardines de La Atalaya, Los Jardines del Taoro, and Camino de la Sortija. This park offers a great way to get a taste of the countryside without getting too far out of town. It is a slight bit of a climb, including a stairway of 250 steps, but don’t worry – there are a lot of places along the way where you can rest. Walking up the stairs is definitely worth it and you’ll notice this as soon as you reach the top! Not just the views, but the amazing area filled with plants and flowers, and especially the waterfalls is worth the walk. This park also features a children’s playground, a bandstand with a restaurant, a bar and a terrace area.

Tigaiga Hotel Gardens

With even outdoor terraces and a swimming pool, you definitely can’t miss out on this special garden. These gardens belong to a hotel called Hotel Tigaiga and are located in Puerto de la Cruz. The parks are very well maintained. You can find an amazing collection of classified plant species. At the hotel reception, you’ll get a guide. If you’re looking for a quiet and pleasant place to visit, this is a recommended place.
