El Hierro Day Trip From Tenerife, Currently Paused

Heads up: the El Hierro day trip is not running at the moment, because the ferry schedules no longer allow a morning trip out and a return to Tenerife the same day (more on that below). We would rather be honest than take a booking we cannot deliver. El Hierro is still a beautiful UNESCO island though, so here is what makes it special, what the tour covered, and, since it is paused, the island day trips we can take you on right now.

Not bookable today, but worth knowing about. When El Hierro works again, we will bring it back. Until then, La Palma and La Gomera are the ones to do.

⚠ Why This Tour Is Currently Paused

There are ferries a El Hierro, but there is currently no return ferry to Tenerife on the same day. That means a proper day trip is not possible right now, you would have to stay overnight, and a tour with an overnight stay is a different product.

We are watching the schedules, and if a morning departure with an evening return becomes possible, we will bring the tour back (most likely by ferry). Want us to let you know if it reopens? Escríbenos por WhatsApp.

El Hierro, One Of The Canary Islands' Best-Kept Secrets

El Hierro is the smallest and most westerly of the main Canary Islands, about ten times smaller than Tenerife, and it feels like a world away from the resorts. It is a UNESCO Global Geopark and Biosphere Reserve, and it was the first island in the world to run on 100% renewable energy, using wind turbines, solar panels and other green sources. For visitors, it means dramatic volcanic landscapes, quiet villages, big viewpoints and barely any crowds.

What Makes El Hierro Special

  • A UNESCO island. Recognised as a Global Geopark and Biosphere Reserve for its landscapes and nature.
  • A green pioneer. The first island in the world designed to be self-sufficient on renewable energy.
  • Volcanic scenery. Craters, lava fields, cliffs and clear waters, with some of the calmest diving in the Canaries around La Restinga.
  • Real Canarian life. Small towns like Valverde and Frontera, old traditions, and local food far from the tourist trail.

What The Tour Covered (And Will Again)

Here is the itinerary the El Hierro day trip used to run, kept as a preview for when it returns. It was a full day of viewpoints, villages, culture and a traditional Canarian lunch.

  • Around 08:45, Mirador de la Peña. Start the day at this famous viewpoint, with a refreshment at the café.

  • Villages of the north. Explore Valverde, El Mocanal, Erese and Guarazoca, each with its own scenery.

  • San Andrés peaks to Mirador de las Playas. A scenic drive to more sweeping coastal views.

  • La Restinga. A 45-minute break in this southern fishing village and diving spot.

  • Hoya del Morcillo to Frontera. Stop at Mirador Cota Ochocientos, visit the Candelaria church, and see a traditional Canarian lucha (wrestling) match at a local terrero.

  • Lunch around 14:00. A traditional Canarian meal with drinks.

  • La Maceta and Punta Grande. Coastal views and a brief stop, then a scenic drive back via Valverde.

What the tour included
  • Round-trip travel (paused for now, hoped to return by ferry).
  • A professional, knowledgeable tour guide.
  • A traditional Canarian lunch with drinks.
When it returns, you'll need
  • Your ID or passport for travel.
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes for a full day of exploring.

Island Day Trips You Can Do Right Now

While El Hierro is on hold, two other islands make brilliant day trips from Tenerife, and these are running. Both are easy to reach, full of scenery, and a great way to see a second island in a day.

A Friendly Bit Of Local Advice

See Tenerife properly first. Island-hopping is great, but Tenerife itself has so much to offer, Teide, the old towns, the coast, whales and dolphins, that we usually suggest exploring your home island fully before spending a whole day travelling to another. Once you have done Tenerife, a day trip to La Palma or La Gomera is the perfect next step. Have a look at everything to do on Tenerife.

Booking, when it reopens: when the El Hierro trip returns, you will be able to book it here with Club Canary, with a small deposit, fast confirmation and local support every day 08:00 to 22:00. Rated 4.8/5 from 1,375+ opiniones verificadas.

La Opinión Sincera de Club Canary

Hablando en serio de su equipo local en las Islas Canarias

El Hierro is genuinely one of the most special islands in the Canaries, quiet, green-powered, volcanic and totally unspoiled. We would love to run the day trip again, and the only reason it is paused is honest and simple: the ferry timetable no longer allows a there-and-back day, and we will not sell an overnight as a day trip.

So for now, if you want to see a second island, do La Palma or La Gomera, both work beautifully as day trips and both are running. And our real advice? Explore Tenerife fully first, there is more here than most people expect. When El Hierro comes back, we will be the first to tell you.

A stunning island, paused for good reasons. La Palma and La Gomera are ready when you are.
