Whale Watching From Santa Cruz And North Tenerife, With Pickup Included

Staying in Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz and want to see whales and dolphins? Here is the problem: the whales are off the south west coast, and almost every boat leaves from down there. So if you are based in the north, most whale watching trips simply are not sold to you. This one is. The Royal Delfin catamaran runs a 4.5-hour cruise to Los Gigantes and Masca Bay every day, and a coach collects you from your side of the island and brings you back. Food, drinks and 16 underwater viewing windows are included. Be straight with yourself about one thing though: it is a long day, and we explain exactly how long below.

💜 Warum Bei Club Canary Buchen?

We are not going to pretend this is a quick afternoon out, because it is not. What we will do is tell you the real pickup times, the real return times and what the day actually feels like, so you can decide properly. Reserve with a deposit and pay the rest on the boat, groups get an automatic saving, and our local team is on WhatsApp every day from 08:00 to 22:00 in English, Spanish, Dutch and more. Rated 4.8/5 from 1.375+ verifizierte Bewertungen.

68€ per adult and 45€ per child aged 3 to 11, with return transport from Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz included. Babies under 3 travel free.

The honest version: a lot of coach, a genuinely good boat, and the only way to do this from the north.

This is a 4.5-hour whale and dolphin watching cruise on the Royal Delfin catamaran, with free return transport from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz, booked through Club Canary. The boat sails daily at 14:00 from Puerto Colon along the south west coast to the cliffs of Los Gigantes, with a swim and lunch stop in Masca Bay and 16 underwater viewing windows on board. Pickup runs from 10:50 in Puerto de la Cruz and 12:15 at Santa Lastenia in Santa Cruz, with guests back between 19:30 and 21:00 depending on the stop and the traffic. Adults are 68€, children aged 3 to 11 are 45€, and babies under 3 travel free.

⚠️ This Is A Full Day, Not An Afternoon

The boat trip is 4,5 Stunden. The day is not. Because the whales are in the south and you are in the north, you are on a coach for a large part of it.

Aus Puerto de la Cruz you are picked up between 10:50 and 11:45 and dropped back between 20:30 and 21:00. Depending on your stop, that is roughly 9 bis 10 Stunden door to door.

Aus Santa Cruz you are picked up at 12:15 and dropped back between 19:30 und 20:00. Roughly 7 to 8 hours.

So yes, a fair chunk of your day is spent sitting on a coach, and those return times depend on traffic. We cannot promise the minute you will be home. If that is a deal breaker, we would rather you know now than find out at 20:45 on a bus outside Botanico.

We are telling you this because we want the right people booking it. If you are in Santa Cruz for a few days, or staying in Puerto de la Cruz for a week, and whale watching is something you really want to tick off, then giving up one day for it is a fair trade and most guests are glad they did it. If you only have a couple of days and a packed schedule, this is probably not the one.

If you are in the south, do not book this page. You would be paying for transport you do not need. Book the Royal Delfin from Puerto Colon instead, where it is a short hop to the harbour and there is a 3-hour option too.

If you have your own car, same advice. Drive to Puerto Colon, park for around 1,20€ an hour and book the south page. You will pay less, skip the coach entirely and get several hours of your day back.

Pickup Points And Times

What The Boat Trip Is Actually Like

Once you are on board, this is a genuinely good trip, and it is the reason the long day is worth considering at all. The Royal Delfin has been running since 1985 and it is the only catamaran in Tenerife with 16 panoramic underwater windows, each 50 inches, so you can watch from below the waterline as well as from the decks.

Die Route

Sailing at 14:00 from Puerto Colon, the boat heads along the south west coast towards the cliffs of Los Gigantes, looking for pilot whales and dolphins on the way. These waters sit inside the Teno-Rasca protected marine area, and the resident pods live here all year, so there is no wrong month for it. You anchor in Masca-Schacht under the cliffs for a swim and a courtesy lunch, then cruise back.

Food And Drinks, Included

Seasonal fruit as an aperitif, a courtesy lunch served on board, and drinks throughout the trip: beer, sangria, juice, water and soft drinks. A vegetarian and gluten free alternative is available if you ask when booking. There is also free wifi, with coverage that comes and goes at sea.

Honest About The Underwater Windows

They are a real feature and children love them, but the clearest wildlife views are usually from the open decks. Think of the windows as a proper extra rather than the main event, and you will enjoy them more.

☀️ In Summer, This Boat Gets Busy

The Royal Delfin has 222 seats and the operator sells a maximum of 200. In July and August it often sails close to full. That means queues at the lunch service, people standing near the underwater windows, and less elbow room on deck.

It is still a big, stable boat with indoor seating, shade and open decks, so there is room to move. But if you picture a quiet little catamaran with twenty people on it, this is not that, and we would rather say so now. Outside the summer months it is noticeably calmer, which is worth knowing if your dates are flexible.

Prices With Transport Included

Adult 68€ · Child 3 To 11, 45€ · Under 3 Free Return transport from Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz is included in the price, not an extra. Guests aged 12 and over pay the adult rate. You reserve with a deposit and pay the balance on the boat, in cash or by card.

👥 Group saving, applied automatically. Every fourth adult takes 15€ off your total. So 4 adults save 15€, 8 adults save 30€, 12 adults save 45€, and it keeps going. No code needed, the booking selector shows the lower price.

What is included in that price: return transport, the 4.5-hour cruise, sustainable whale and dolphin watching, multilingual guides, the swim stop in Masca Bay, seasonal fruit, a courtesy lunch, drinks throughout, free wifi, port taxes and insurance. The main things not included are hotel extras, tips and the onboard photo service, which is optional and you are free to ignore.

Where exactly do you pick me up in Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz?

Unter Santa Cruz de Tenerife the pickup is the Santa Lastenia bus stop at 12:15, every day. In Puerto de la Cruz the coach works through 12 stops between 10:50 and 11:45, including Precise Resort, Panoramica, Las Aguilas, Parque San Antonio, Alua Tenerife, Magec, McDonalds, Botanico, Kiosco Paraguitas, Teidemar and Garoe. There is also a stop at Punta del Rey bus stop at 12:30. You are dropped back at the same place at the end of the day. If your hotel is not next to a stop, message the Club Canary team and we will tell you which one to walk to.

How long is the whole day, not just the boat trip?

The boat trip is 4,5 Stunden. The day is much longer, because the whales are off the south west coast and you are starting in the north. From Puerto de la Cruz you are collected between 10:50 and 11:45 and back between 20:30 and 21:00, so roughly 9 bis 10 Stunden door to door. From Santa Cruz you are collected at 12:15 and back between 19:30 and 20:00, so roughly 7 to 8 hours. A fair part of that is spent on the coach. We would rather tell you straight than have you find out on the day.

What time will I actually be back, exactly?

We cannot promise an exact minute, and anyone who does is guessing. The coach returns north on public roads and the traffic varies, especially in the evening. Plan for roughly 19:30 to 20:00 in Santa Cruz und 20:30 to 21:00 in Puerto de la Cruz. Do not book a restaurant table for 20:00 in Puerto de la Cruz on the same evening, and do not plan anything tight afterwards. Treat it as a full day out and you will enjoy it far more.

Is the transport really included, or is it an extra?

It is genuinely included. 68€ per adult and 45€ per child aged 3 to 11 covers the return coach from Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz, the 4.5-hour cruise, the swim stop in Masca Bay, a courtesy lunch, drinks throughout, multilingual guides, port taxes and insurance. Babies aged 0 to 2 travel free. Guests aged 12 and over pay the adult price. There is no transfer surcharge added at the boat.

I have a car, or I am staying in the south. Should I book this page?

No, and we would rather say so. If you can get yourself to Puerto Colon, book the Royal Delfin from Puerto Colon instead. You pay less because you are not paying for transport you do not need, you skip several hours on a coach, and that page also offers a shorter 3-hour trip which this one does not. Parking at the harbour is around 1,20€ per hour. This page exists for people who genuinely cannot get south easily.

Will the boat be crowded?

In summer, yes, it often is. The Royal Delfin has 222 seats and the operator sells a maximum of 200, and in July and August it regularly sails close to full. Expect a queue at the lunch service and people gathered around the underwater windows. It is a large, stable catamaran with indoor seating, shade and open decks, so there is room to move, but it is not a quiet little boat with twenty guests. Outside the summer months it is noticeably calmer, which is worth knowing if your dates are flexible.

Will I definitely see whales and dolphins?

No boat can promise that, and this is wild nature rather than a show. What helps here is that the pilot whales and dolphins off this coast are resident all year, not seasonal visitors, so there is no wrong month to go. The route passes through the Teno-Rasca protected marine area and the operator is licensed for sustainable cetacean watching, holding the Barco Azul flag. Because the animals are wild, no refund is given if they do not appear.

What are the underwater windows really like?

The Royal Delfin is the only catamaran in Tenerife with 16 panoramic underwater windows, each 50 inches, set below the waterline. They are a real feature and children tend to love them. Being honest about it, the clearest wildlife views are usually from the open decks rather than through the glass, and the window area gets busy when the boat is full. Treat them as a very good extra rather than the main event and you will get more out of them.

Can I do this trip if I am arriving on a cruise ship?

Almost certainly not, and we will not sell it to you as though you can. There is no pickup at the cruise terminal. You would need a taxi to the Santa Lastenia bus stop for 12:15, about 15 minutes away, then a taxi back after being dropped there between 19:30 and 20:00. That puts you at your ship around 19:45 to 20:15, and most ships close boarding between 17:00 and 19:00. The operator has already had cruise guests who could not make it back in time. Unless your ship stays overnight or sails very late, please choose something else, and message us and we will find you a trip that fits your hours ashore.

Is the trip suitable for a wheelchair user?

Not from this page, because the coach transfer is not adapted for wheelchairs. Guests using a wheelchair need to travel directly to Puerto Colon and book the Royal Delfin from Puerto Colon instead, telling us in advance. On board, the main deck is accessible and manual wheelchairs up to 68cm wide can be carried, but electric wheelchairs cannot. The upper deck and the underwater viewing area are reached by stairs, and there is no fully accessible toilet on board, though Puerto Colon has accessible toilets near the boarding area.

Staying in the north and looking for more to do? See all excursions and activities in Puerto de la Cruz. Have your own transport, or staying in the south? Book the Royal Delfin from Puerto Colon instead, with no transport cost and a 3-hour option as well.

Die Ehrliche Meinung von Club Canary

Ehrliche Worte von eurem lokalen Team von den Kanarischen Inseln

We built this page for one specific person: someone staying in Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz who really wants to see whales and dolphins, and has found that almost nobody will collect them. The whales are in the south, the boats are in the south, and if you are up north you are usually out of luck. This is the solution, and as far as we know it is the only one with a coach that comes to you.

Now the honest part. It is a long day, and a good chunk of it is spent on a coach. From Puerto de la Cruz you could be out for ten hours to spend four and a half on the water. In summer the boat sails close to its 200 guest limit and it feels busy. The return time moves with the traffic, so we will not pretend to know the exact minute you are home.

If you have one spare day and you want this properly, take it. The cliffs at Los Gigantes from the water, a swim in Masca Bay, the underwater windows, lunch and drinks sorted, and resident pods that are there all year. Plenty of guests come back saying it was the highlight of the week.

And if you have a car or you are staying in the south, do not book this one. Go to the Puerto Colon page, pay less and skip the bus. We would rather send you to the cheaper option than have you sitting on a coach you did not need.

One long day, one very good boat trip, and the only pickup from your side of the island.
