Black lace, and a lot of crying.

Most of them men. Veils, sunglasses, handkerchiefs, fainting on cue. Come in black and you are part of the funeral instead of watching it.

Entierro de la Sardina Tenerife 2027, The Funeral Of The Sardine

Wednesday 24 February 2027, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The day after the Coso Apoteosis the city buries its Carnival. A giant sardine is carried through the streets to the harbour, followed by thousands of "widows" in black veils, most of them men, wailing, fainting and drinking to the dead fish, with brass bands playing funeral marches. At the water the sardine burns and the fireworks go up. It is the strangest, funniest night of the Tenerife Carnival and almost no tourist from the south ever sees it, because there is no bus. Now there is. Club Canary runs one coach from the south and a line from Puerto de la Cruz, with a host at boarding and the way home sorted. No chairs, you walk with the procession. Full payment at booking.

What Happens At The Entierro de la Sardina

Ash Wednesday is the day Carnival is supposed to end, and Santa Cruz ends it with a joke. A sardine several metres long, built on a float, leaves the centre in the evening with a procession behind it: widows in black lace and veils, priests who are not priests, bishops with fake beards, people screaming with grief and laughing at the same time, brass bands playing slow marches at double speed. The route goes down to the harbour. There the sardine is set on fire, the crowd cheers, the fireworks start over the water, and the widows head to the bars, because in Santa Cruz the Carnival does not really end here; the Carnaval de Día and the Piñata follow at the weekend. For a visitor it is the one night that shows what this island finds funny.

1
Pick-up, early evening

Between about 17:45 and 19:15 in the south depending on your area, around 18:30 to 19:30 in Puerto de la Cruz. Your exact time and point come by email about two weeks before, once Club Canary has grouped all guests by area.

2
Drop-off and a walk to the centre

Buses park in the zone the authorities assign that night, usually 10 to 25 minutes on foot from the procession. Your host tells you the return meeting point and time before you get off. From there you are free.

3
The procession, from about 21:00

Find the sardine, join the widows, walk with it towards the harbour. It is slow, loud and packed. Costume optional, black recommended, see below.

4
The fire and the fireworks, around 23:00

The sardine burns at the water and the fireworks follow. This is what you came for; do not leave early for the bus, the bus is timed for after it.

5
Back to the bus, around 23:45

Walk back to the meeting point at the time on your ticket. The bus leaves in the slot the traffic police assign and cannot wait. Miss it and the way home is a taxi at your own cost, on a night when taxis are scarce.

6
Home, usually around 01:00

Drop-off at the same point you were collected. A bus with many stops, or heavy traffic out of the city, takes longer; the times on this page are guide times, not a promise. Staying with the widows instead? Tell your host and find your own way back later.

Pick-Up Areas For The Entierro de la Sardina

One coach from the south and one line from the north, so the pick-up round is planned tight. Club Canary collects from hotels and known meeting points, never from private addresses or apartments. Enter your hotel name when booking, or the nearest hotel if you stay in an apartment. Residents write Arona Gran Hotel, Plaza del Duque shopping centre, or the hotel nearest to them.

Los Gigantes, Playa Paraiso, Costa AdejeAround 17:45 to 18:30, west to east.
Playa de las Américas and Los CristianosAround 18:30 to 18:50. Las Américas hotels, Los Cristianos centre and Arona Gran Hotel.
Costa del Silencio, Las Galletas, Palm MarAround 18:50 to 19:00.
San Miguel, Golf del Sur, El MédanoAround 19:00 to 19:15. Last stops before the motorway north.
Puerto de la Cruz and La OrotavaAround 18:30 to 19:30, separate bus from the north, runs from 25 guests of its own.
Candelaria and Las CaletillasOn request, the bus passes nearby. Ask on WhatsApp before you book.

Times are guide times. With one coach the round can shift; the time on your ticket is the one that counts.

Dress Code: Black, And Sad

The Entierro has a uniform and it costs nothing: black. A black dress, a black shirt, a veil if you can find one, sunglasses at night, a handkerchief to cry into. Men dressed as widows are the tradition, not the exception. You can go in normal clothes and nobody will mind, but in black you are part of the funeral instead of a spectator at it, and the photos are ten times better. Bring a jacket under the black, February at the harbour after midnight is cold and the fireworks take a while.

Doing the Coso the day before? Your red Roman cape can come along, plenty of people arrive still in costume. Tonight black wins, but red over black looks like a cardinal at a funeral, and that is very much in the spirit of the night.

Your Collectible Card

Every Club Canary order for the Entierro de la Sardina comes with the collectible card for this night, the last one of the Carnival series, printed by us in Costa Adeje and handed to you on the bus. The four Carnival cards together tell the whole week: the opening on Friday, the drums on Saturday, the parade on Tuesday, the funeral on Wednesday.

Read This Before You Book

It is late and it is loud. Pick-up early evening, fireworks around 23:00, home around 01:00. Children from 8 travel at the child rate; under 8 cannot join. It is a night for adults and older kids who can walk for hours and stay awake past midnight. Keep your group together, phone signal drops in the crowd.
One coach, one chance. There is one bus from the south. If it is full, it is full; if it does not reach 25 guests by 1 February, it does not run and you are refunded in full. Book early if you want to be sure of the night, book anyway if you want to be sure of your money.
The parking zone and the return slot. The authorities decide on the night where the buses park and when they leave, and do not tell anyone in advance. Some years it is close, some years a 20 minute walk. We cannot choose it, we cannot swap it, and it is not a reason for a refund.
Hosts help you board, they do not guide you. A Club Canary host checks tickets at the pick-up stops and gets everyone on the bus, in English and Spanish. Nobody walks with you in Santa Cruz or explains the procession. Be on time, know your return meeting point, keep your phone charged.

Why Club Canary Runs A Bus To The Entierro

Because every year guests on the Coso bus ask us what happens the day after, and every year we had to say: something wonderful, and you cannot get there. Club Canary has run buses to the Santa Cruz Carnival every year since 2022, more than 370 guests for the Coso Apoteosis alone in 2026, with authorised access to the Carnival bus zone, hosts at boarding, a line from Puerto de la Cruz and a written policy for the night the city cancels. The Entierro is the fourth night we add, and the first one with a minimum guest rule, because we would rather tell you the truth about one coach than promise a bus we cannot fill. Club Canary is a licensed travel agency with an office in Plaza del Duque, Costa Adeje, open every day, and our Best Price Guarantee applies.

The Other Carnival Nights With Club Canary

Entierro de la Sardina 2027, Booking Policy

Payment And Minimum Guests

  • Full payment at booking. Bookings for this event opened on 27 September 2026.
  • The south bus runs with a minimum of 25 guests and the Puerto de la Cruz bus with a minimum of 25 guests of its own. If a bus has not reached 25 by 1 February 2027, Club Canary cancels that bus and refunds every guest on it in full, or offers a seat on the other bus.
  • Groups of 15 or more can ask for an invoice and a payment split before booking.
  • Prices can rise when availability drops. A lower price seen elsewhere is not a reason for a refund or a chargeback.

Resident Price

  • For residents of the Canary Islands, coach only. After booking, send your order number and NIE on WhatsApp so your name is on the boarding list.
  • Show your residence card at boarding. Without it, 12,50€ per person is paid by payment link before boarding: the 10€ difference to the adult price plus 2,50€ administration. No payment, no boarding, no refund.

If You Cancel

  • More than 45 days before: 100 percent refund.
  • 20 to 45 days before: 90 percent. The 10 percent covers administration and payment costs.
  • 12 to 20 days before: 75 percent.
  • 5 to 12 days before: 60 percent.
  • 1 to 5 days before: 40 percent.
  • Less than 24 hours, no-show, or missing the bus at the meeting point: no refund.
  • Illness is not covered unless you send an official medical certificate; then Club Canary asks the partner for a refund on your behalf. Travel insurance is recommended.

If The City Cancels

  • If the Entierro de la Sardina is cancelled by the authorities before departure, for any reason including safety, public order or weather, Club Canary refunds 80 percent. The remaining 20 percent covers bus, staff and payment costs already made.
  • If the event is cancelled after arrival in Santa Cruz and the host decides to return early, 40 percent of the bus price is refunded.
  • Rain and normal weather are not grounds for refunds. The fireworks can be cancelled by wind without the procession being cancelled; that is not a reason for a refund either.
  • Return times on this page are guide times. Traffic, the number of drop-off stops on your bus and the slot assigned by the police can make the journey home longer; this is not a reason for a refund.
  • Changes to pick-up time, parking zone, walking route, procession timing or return slot made by the authorities or by traffic are part of Carnival and not grounds for refunds.

On The Bus And In Town

  • Follow the host and the driver. Unsafe or disrespectful behaviour means removal without refund.
  • No alcohol or illegal substances on the bus. Snacks are fine.
  • If you skip the pick-up, leave early, stay in Santa Cruz, or miss the return bus, no partial refund applies. The bus cannot wait for late guests; a taxi back is at your own cost.
  • Children from 8 to 11 travel at the child rate; under 8 cannot join this night.
  • Club Canary provides the transfer. Crowds, noise, weather, fire and the procession itself are not ours to control and not grounds for refunds.

By booking you confirm you have read this policy. Questions before the night: info@clubcanary.com or WhatsApp. On the night: follow the instructions on your ticket and ask your host.

Entierro de la Sardina 2027, Your Questions

What is the Entierro de la Sardina in Tenerife?

The Entierro de la Sardina, the Burial of the Sardine, is the night Santa Cruz de Tenerife ends its Carnival on Ash Wednesday: a giant sardine on a float is carried through the streets to the harbour by thousands of mock widows in black, with brass bands playing funeral marches, then set on fire under fireworks. It is the funniest night of the Tenerife Carnival and the one visitors from the south almost never see, because there was no bus. Club Canary now runs one, from the south and from Puerto de la Cruz.

Why does the Club Canary bus to the Entierro de la Sardina need 25 guests?

Because the Entierro de la Sardina is a new night for Club Canary and one coach is the plan. A coach costs the same empty or full, so the south bus runs from 25 guests and the Puerto de la Cruz bus from 25 guests of its own. If a bus has not reached 25 by 1 February, Club Canary cancels it and refunds everyone on it in full, or offers a seat on the other bus. You book early, you risk nothing.

What should I wear to the Entierro de la Sardina?

Black. The Entierro de la Sardina is a funeral, so the crowd comes as widows: black dress or shirt, a veil, sunglasses, a handkerchief. Men dressed as widows are the tradition. Normal clothes are fine too, but in black you are part of the procession instead of watching it. Bring a jacket, the harbour after midnight in February is cold. Club Canary guests coming from the Coso the day before can bring the red Roman cape; red over black looks like a cardinal at a funeral, which fits.

Can children come to the Entierro de la Sardina with Club Canary?

From 8 years, at the child rate. Under 8 cannot join the Club Canary bus to the Entierro de la Sardina: the fireworks are around 23:00, the bus is home around 01:00, and the procession is loud, packed and full of people pretending to faint. Older kids who can walk for hours and stay up love it; small ones do not. Families with young children are better at the Coso Apoteosis by day.

What time does the Entierro de la Sardina bus get back?

The Club Canary bus leaves Santa Cruz after the fireworks, around 23:45, in the slot the traffic police assign, and drops you at your pick-up point around 01:00. The return meeting point and time are on your ticket and your host repeats them on the bus. The bus cannot wait for late guests; a taxi back on the last Carnival Wednesday is a long wait and at your own cost.

Can I cancel my Entierro de la Sardina booking with Club Canary?

Yes. Club Canary refunds 100 percent more than 45 days before the Entierro de la Sardina, 90 percent from 45 to 20 days before, then 75, 60 and 40 percent in the steps shown in the booking policy on this page, and nothing inside 24 hours or for a no-show. If Club Canary cancels the bus because it did not reach 25 guests, you get 100 percent back whatever the date. Illness needs an official medical certificate. We recommend travel insurance for every holiday.
