Straight answers to help you choose between a captain, the no-license boat, and this licensed self-drive option. Still unsure? Message the Club Canary team on WhatsApp.
Can I rent a boat in Tenerife and drive it myself?
Yes. Club Canary has small self-drive boats that need no license, and faster motorboats for customers who already hold an accepted boat license. If you do not specifically want to drive, a private boat trip with a professional captain is normally the easiest and most relaxing option.
Do I need a boat license to rent a self-drive boat in Tenerife?
For these faster motorboats, yes, the driver must hold a Spanish Titulín or a full boat license. If you do not have a license, you can still drive a smaller boat yourself with our no-license self-drive boat, or simply book a boat with a captain and skip the license question entirely.
What if I am not sure my Spanish or foreign license qualifies?
Send Club Canary a photo of your license before booking, and we will confirm with the operator whether it is accepted for the boat you want. Please do not assume a basic license automatically covers every boat, as acceptance depends on the boat and the license type, so it is always best to check with us first.
Is fuel included in the price?
No. For the licensed self-drive boats, fuel is not included and is paid separately, on top of the hire rate. The team explains the fuel on the day. This is different from a captained trip, where you simply pay the trip price.
What boats are available, and how many people fit?
There are two motorboats, both 6.5m for up to 8 viesi, with Garmin GPS, a sea-map monitor, Bluetooth, an awning and 8 life jackets. The Nautipol has a 115 HP Suzuki engine, and the Mingolla has a 150 HP Tohatsu engine, a solarium and a cabin. Both are the same price, from 275€ for 2 hours up to 585€ for 6 hours, paid as a deposit online plus the balance on arrival, with fuel separate.
Is it easier to just rent a boat with a captain?
For most people, yes. A private boat trip with a captain means no license, no driving, and no fuel to manage. The crew knows the good spots, food and drinks can be arranged, and everyone, including the person who would have been driving, can relax and enjoy a drink. Self-drive is really for people who specifically want to steer the boat themselves.
What is the difference between the no-license and licensed self-drive boats?
Portāls no-license boat is a smaller boat that anyone 18 or over can drive without a license, and fuel is included. The licensed boats on this page are faster motorboats that require an accepted boat license, and fuel is paid separately. Both are self-drive with no captain on board.
Where do the boats leave from?
All boats depart from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje, in the south of Tenerife. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your start time with your license and ID, and your Club Canary confirmation gives the exact meeting details.

We will be honest, because it saves you hassle. This licensed self-drive option is brilliant for the right person: you hold a boat license, you actually enjoy driving, and you want no captain telling you where to go. The Nautipol and Mingolla are proper motorboats, and having the whole coast to yourself is a lot of fun.
But for most people, it is not the easy option. You need to send a license photo, fuel is extra, the driver cannot drink, and you are responsible on the water. If you just want a relaxed day out, a private boat trip with a captain is usually better: no license, drinks and food sorted, and you get properly looked after. And if you want to drive but have no license, go for the no-license boat instead.
Perfect if you have a license and want to drive. If not, a captained trip is the easier, more relaxing pick.
