Thinking About Water Sports? Read This First
Straight talk, because nobody else gives it. Water sports are the one tricky thing from Puerto de la Cruz. There are basically none in town, it is a licensing thing, and most diving, surf and fishing trips are short and based down south. Driving an hour each way for a one hour activity rarely makes sense, and if you hit traffic and arrive late you can lose the booking. So we will not push it unless you have your own transport or you are combining it with something else.
If water sports are an absolute must, it might be worth basing a day around the south. Honestly though, it is not a big loss, there is so much else to do up here.
Jet Ski Safari, Los Gigantes
Good news though. Since summer 2026 we run our own jet ski safari from Los Gigantes, riding right under those giant cliffs, and it is stunning. Los Gigantes is a touch closer to Puerto de la Cruz than the southern bases. If jet ski is on your list and you have transport, this is the one.

Quick honest word. Google "best things to do in Puerto de la Cruz" and you will mostly find travel bloggers who visited once and listed pretty, free, Instagram friendly spots. We get it, they make lovely photos. But for the average family or average Joe, those are not really the must dos. The honest truth is that the best experiences here usually cost money, and those are the activities above. Nothing on this island is undiscovered, there is tourism here every year. So we will be real with you: book the activities for the proper days out, and keep the free stuff for filling the gaps.
Visit A Botanic Garden

Shopping
Honest take, Puerto de la Cruz is not a shopping town. For real shopping, Santa Cruz or the south have far more. If you have a car, here are the best shopping places across the island.
Street Markets
There are two outdoor markets. The Puerto de la Cruz Street Market runs every Wednesday and Saturday from 08:00, with around 25 stalls of clothing, footwear, antiques and local handicrafts (cash and card both fine, wheelchair accessible). The smaller Rastro del Parque Taoro runs weekly in Parque Taoro, focused on antiques and second hand finds. Markets are not everyone's thing, but if you are around on a Saturday morning they are an easy wander.
The Free, Instagrammy Stuff
If photos are your thing, wander Calle Mequinez for big street art murals, climb the colourful Agatha Christie book steps, stroll the promenade past the black sand beaches, and grab a drink outside on a buzzing street at night. All free, all pretty, none of them essential. Nice for filling an afternoon.
Drink A Barraquito

On restaurants, we will not tell you go here or go there, because it is personal. Open Google Maps, check the reviews, or just walk about and follow where the locals are. Honestly, the magic of the north is getting a little lost: the main square, the beach club, a random local party you stumble into. You will not miss out by not over planning. Is Loro Parque close to Puerto de la Cruz?
It is basically your neighbour. Loro Parque is the famous animal park you will see plastered on every poster in town, and it is a five minute hop, not a day trip. If you are going, do it the Club Canary way with the all inclusive ticket. Guided tour, VIP seats at the shows, unlimited food and drinks, and a welcome cap. We are big on the luxury side, so we make sure you get the proper day out, not just a ticket through the gate.
Can I get to Mount Teide from Puerto de la Cruz?
