Try dive, 20 or 40 minutes underwater. 30 minutes land training first. Ages 8 to 65.
Scuba Diving Fuerteventura, What A Try Dive Actually Is
Straight up, because this is where most diving pages are vague. A try dive is a first dive for someone with no qualification and no experience. You are not doing a course, you are not getting a certificate, and you do not need to know anything beforehand.
What happens is simple: thirty minutes on land learning how to breathe through a regulator, how to clear your mask and the few hand signals that matter. Then you get in the water with an instructor beside you for the entire dive. They manage your buoyancy and your depth. Your job is to breathe and look around.
Why Fuerteventura Suits A First Dive
Fuerteventura scuba diving has one big advantage for beginners: water temperature stays comfortable year round and visibility here is genuinely good, which matters far more on a first dive than most people realise. Cold, murky water is what makes beginners panic. Warm and clear is what makes them come back.
20 Or 40 Minutes, Which Try Dive?
Same training, same instructor, same site. The only difference is how long you stay down, and the honest answer depends on how you feel about the water.
20 Minutes Underwater
- Enough to know whether diving is for you.
- Right if you are nervous about breathing underwater.
- Also right if the rest of your day is busy.
The safe first step.
40 Minutes Underwater
- Double the bottom time for a small step up.
- The first five minutes go on getting comfortable, so 20 leaves you just as you settle.
- More time actually looking at fish rather than at your own hands.
Almost everyone who takes 20 wishes they had taken 40.
Genuinely nervous? Take the 20. There is no shame in it and you can always book again.
Fine in the water and curious? Take the 40. The extra time is where the enjoyment is.
Not sure you want your head under at all? Start with the snorkelling session instead. Same island, no tank, and nobody will judge you.
Dive Center Fuerteventura, Diving Atlantis At La Lajita
If you have been comparing dive center Fuerteventura options, this is the one we book for first-timers in the south.
The dives run from Diving Atlantis, a dive centre at La Lajita on the south-east coast. Club Canary handles your booking, your questions and your support, and Atlantis runs the diving and the instructors.
Practically, that means proper facilities rather than a van on a beach: changing rooms, restrooms and secure storage for your things while you are in the water. The staff speak several languages, and so do the instructors, which matters when someone is explaining how to equalise your ears.
Fuerteventura Diving For First-Timers, Ages 8 To 65
The age range is worth knowing because it is wider at the bottom than most people expect. Children can try diving from 8 years old, which makes this one of the few genuinely underwater activities open to a younger family. The upper limit is 65.
Families. From 8 upwards, so parents and children can do it together. Children often take to it faster because they overthink it less.
Pregnancy: permitted up to 5 months by the operator.
Over 65? Message us before booking and we will ask the dive centre rather than have you turned away at the base.
Already certified? This is a try dive, so it is not really aimed at you. Tell us what you are after and we will be straight about whether we can help.
You do need to be reasonably comfortable in water. You do not need to be a strong swimmer.

Make A Day Of It At La Lajita
A try dive takes a few hours, and La Lajita sits in the middle of everything we run in southern Fuerteventura. So here is what genuinely fits around it, including one thing from the same base.
Roeien
- Runs from the same Atlantis base at La Lajita.
- One hour guided, one hour free, about 3 hours total.
- Dry, calm, and a completely different view of the same coast.
Snorkelen
- The step below a try dive, no tank involved.
- Good for anyone in the group who does not fancy going under.
Buggytocht
- Starts at Matas Blancas, Costa Calma, minutes away.
- From 120€ per buggy, not per person.
- Water in the morning, dust in the afternoon.
Jet Ski, Morro Jable
- A short drive south along the coast.
- 30 minutes from 70€, or a 1 hour safari from 130€.
Boats from Morro Jable. A dolphin watching trip with a money-back sighting option, the small group catamaran with paella and drinks, or a private speedboat charter.
Evening? Sterrenkijken clashes with nothing, and the night skies here are genuinely dark.
Booking more than one thing? Message us with your dates and we will check the timings work together, and say so if two things clash rather than selling you both.

De Eerlijke Mening van Club Canary
Eerlijk gesproken van uw lokale team op de Canarische Eilanden
Real talk: this is a try dive, and that is a specific thing. If you have never breathed underwater, it is one of the better experiences on the island, and Fuerteventura is a kind place to do it because the water is warm and you can actually see. Thirty minutes of training, then an instructor holding your hand the whole way down. Genuinely nothing to be nervous about.
Take the 40 minuten if you can. The first five go on getting used to breathing through a regulator, so a 20 minute dive ends roughly when you stop thinking about your own lungs and start noticing the fish.
Two honest things. If you are already a certified diver, this is not aimed at you, so tell us what you actually want. And if the thought of going under is genuinely unpleasant, book the snorkelen instead. Nobody enjoys a dive they spent counting down.
Your first breath underwater. Most people surface asking when they can do it again.
