Discover Bajamar: Things to Do & Local Highlights
A relaxed coastal town in North Tenerife, loved for surfing, sunsets and natural swimming pools.
Bajamar is located in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, in the north of Tenerife. While Tenerife is full of amazing places, Bajamar feels different. More local. More relaxed. More real.
Especially on weekends, the town comes alive.
Families walk along the coast, surfers chase waves, friends sit by the sea until sunset and sports lovers enjoy the fresh ocean air.
If you’re coming from the south of Tenerife, the easiest way to visit Bajamar is by car.
Keep in mind that the north of the island is often a bit cooler and greener than the south, which is exactly what makes it special.
🏄 Bajamar Surfing
Bajamar is one of the most popular surf spots in North Tenerife.
The waves are strong, the views are wild, and the surf community here is very welcoming.
Around the coast you’ll find relaxed surf bars and local restaurants where surfers hang out after a session.
If you want to take surf lessons in Bajamar, you can contact Green Wave Surf School.
Prefer surfing in the south instead?
You can also book: surf lessons in Playa de las Américas.
Bajamar Natural Pools
Bajamar is best known for its incredible natural swimming pools. These pools are formed by volcanic rock and filled with fresh Atlantic seawater.
They are among the most popular natural swimming pools in Tenerife, especially for locals.
Important note:
Always respect local conditions.
On rough days, waves can be strong and dangerous.
If lifeguards advise not to swim, don’t test your luck.
Piscina Natural de Bajamar
Located next to Playa del Arenal, this natural pool connects Bajamar with Punta del Hidalgo.
It’s perfect for swimming and usually has lifeguards present.
Nearby you’ll find cafés, playgrounds, a surf school and a beautiful coastal walking path.
Natural Swimming Pool Punta del Hidalgo
Very similar to the Bajamar pool, this spot is popular with both locals and visitors.
Surfers are often nearby, and the surrounding restaurants are excellent.
It’s also one of the best places in North Tenerife to watch the sunset.
Piscina Natural Punta del Hidalgo (Rock Pools)
At the very end of Punta del Hidalgo you’ll find a series of small natural pools between the rocks.
Perfect for spending a relaxed day by the ocean.
Be careful though, the rocks can be slippery.
If you’re lucky, an ice cream truck might even be parked nearby.
From here you can walk to the modern Punta del Hidalgo lighthouse or explore nearby sports areas, a skate park and a campsite.
✨ More Than Just Bajamar
Bajamar is perfect if you want to experience a more local side of Tenerife. But the island has much more to offer beyond natural pools and surf spots.
From whale watching and water sports to island tours and hidden villages, there’s always something new to explore.
