Can You See Whales In Lanzarote?
Yes. Whale watching in Lanzarote works all year, because short-finned pilot whales live in the waters around the island permanently. They grow up to 6 metres, travel in family groups and are the whales you are most likely to meet on a Lanzarote boat trip. With luck you can also see sperm whales, the largest toothed whales on the planet, and in winter the occasional humpback whale passes by with its famous jumps.
Dolphins In Lanzarote
Dolphin watching in Lanzarote is even more common than whale sightings: bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and spotted dolphins all hunt in these waters. They love to ride the bow wave of the boats, which is why the small dolphin watching RIB gets the closest views. One honest note that never changes: they are wild animals, so no trip can promise a sighting, and no boat here chases or feeds them.
Lanzarote Whale Watching Season
The resident pilot whales and dolphins are here in every month, so there is no wrong time to book a boat excursion in Lanzarote. The richest period runs from December to May, when the variety of visiting species is biggest and the ocean is calm. Summer brings the warmest days and the sunset cruises. Whenever you come, book a few days ahead, because the small boats fill first.
Tips For Your Lanzarote Boat Trip
Bring sunscreen, a hat and a light jacket, because the ocean breeze feels cooler than the beach. If you are sensitive to motion, take a seasickness tablet 30 minutes before departure. Cameras are welcome, but the best views need no zoom: licensed boats are allowed to approach respectfully, then let the animals decide. And drink enough. On most of these trips, the drinks are already included.
Boat Trips That Respect The Ocean
Every operator Club Canary works with in Lanzarote follows the Canary Islands’ wildlife rules: keep a respectful distance, never chase, never feed, and leave when the animals want quiet. The whales were here first, and keeping it that way is what keeps these trips special.
Lanzarote Boat Trips FAQ
What is the best boat trip in Lanzarote?
It depends on your day. The La Graciosa catamaran trip is the most loved full-day excursion, the Sunseeker gives you a luxury yacht feeling at a shared-trip price, the dolphin watching RIB is best for seeing wildlife, and the Wicked Tuna is the one for fishing.
Can you see whales in Lanzarote?
Yes. Short-finned pilot whales live in the waters around Lanzarote all year, and with some luck you can also meet sperm whales. In winter, humpback whales sometimes pass the island. No honest boat trip can guarantee a sighting, because the animals are wild.
Can you see dolphins in Lanzarote?
Yes, and even more often than whales. Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and spotted dolphins all hunt in these waters, and they love to swim beside the boats. The small dolphin watching boat from Puerto del Carmen is built exactly for this.
When is the best time for a boat trip in Lanzarote?
Boat trips run all year. The richest months for whales and dolphins are December to May, while summer brings the warmest days and the sunset cruises. Popular boats fill up days ahead in high season, so book early.
Where do Lanzarote boat trips depart from?
It depends on the trip: the Sunseeker departs from Puerto Calero, the dolphin and fishing boats from Puerto del Carmen, and the La Graciosa catamaran from Orzola in the north. Your exact meeting point is confirmed after booking.
Is there a boat trip from Lanzarote to La Graciosa?
Yes, and it is our most loved excursion: coach transfer, return ferry from Orzola and a luxury catamaran cruise around La Graciosa with paella, open bar and a swim stop at Playa Francesa, all in one booking.
Can I rent a private boat in Lanzarote?
Yes. Lanzarote has a beautiful private fleet: the F40 racing catamaran, a private Sunseeker, private sunset cruises and self-drive boats with or without a licence. You find them all the Club Canary Lanzarote boat hire page.
Are Lanzarote boat trips good for children?
Yes, most trips welcome children with cheaper tickets. The La Graciosa catamaran is the family favorite, and kids join the fishing trip from age 6. For the fast dolphin RIB, check with us first, because it rides low and quick.
What should I bring on a boat trip?
Sunscreen, a hat, swimwear, a towel and a light jacket for the sea breeze. If you are sensitive to motion, take a seasickness tablet about 30 minutes before departure. Drinks are included on most trips.
How does booking with a deposit work?
You reserve your spot online with a small deposit and pay the rest on the day of the trip. Confirmation is fast, and our local team is on WhatsApp every day from 08:00 to 22:00 if plans change.
Can I cancel my Lanzarote boat trip?
Most trips offer free cancellation up to 24 or 48 hours before departure, and the exact window is shown on each trip page. If a captain cancels for unsafe weather, you choose a new date or a refund.
