Three Kings Day Tenerife: A Magical Tradition Celebrated Today

Three Kings Day in Tenerife, also known as Día de los Reyes Magos, is one of the most important and loved traditions in Spain. While Christmas may feel finished for many visitors, locals in Tenerife are still waiting for the most exciting moment of the festive season. Today, 5 January, the island comes alive with parades, music, and celebrations, leading up to gift-giving on 6 January.

For children and families, Three Kings Day is even more important than Christmas Day. Gifts are traditionally given 12 days after Christmas, marking the arrival of the Three Wise Men who brought presents to baby Jesus.

The Days Leading Up to Three Kings Day

In the days before Three Kings Day, children across Tenerife write letters to the Three Kings, asking for gifts and sharing their wishes. On the evening of 5 January, children leave their shoes outside their homes, hoping the Kings will visit during the night.

Today is the most exciting day, as towns across Tenerife host colorful parades known as the Cabalgata de Reyes. These events are especially popular with families and tourists visiting the island in January.

Who Are the Three Kings? Their Names in Spanish

In Spanish, the Three Kings are called Los Reyes Magos. Their names are:

  • Melchor
  • Gaspar
  • Baltasar

They represent the wise men who followed the star to Bethlehem, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In Spain and Tenerife, they are the central figures of Three Kings Day celebrations.

Why Gifts Are Given After Christmas in Spain

While some children receive small gifts on Christmas Day, the main gift-giving moment happens on 6 January. This tradition reflects the biblical story of the Three Kings visiting Jesus 12 days after his birth.

For visitors, this is a unique cultural experience and one of the best family-friendly events to see in Tenerife in January.
