The PADI Open Water course in La Palma is a 3 day beginner diving course from the dive centre in Los Cancajos, on the east coast of the island. You do the theory online before you arrive, then confined water skills and 4 open water dives to 18 metres with a PADI instructor, maximum three students per instructor, all equipment included. Advanced Open Water, fun dives and the full PADI ladder are available at the same centre.

Learn To Dive In La Palma, Properly

Most people get their licence on a holiday because the water at home is cold and green. La Palma is the opposite: a young volcanic island with no sand to cloud the sea, so visibility is often twenty metres or more, and the east coast at Los Cancajos is sheltered and calm. The dive centre is a PADI instructor development centre, the level above a normal dive school, and it keeps the groups at three students per instructor. Many schools take eight. The difference shows on your first skills session.

  • Theory online at home, your days here are all in the water.
  • Maximum 3 students per instructor, smaller groups when children join.
  • Confined water skills, then 4 real open water dives to 18 metres.
  • All equipment included for the whole course.
  • Official PADI Open Water Diver certification, valid worldwide for life.

How The Course Works

Before You Arrive
PADI eLearning

The theory, online, in your language, about 8 to 12 hours at your own pace. Finish it at home and arrive with the knowledge review done.

Day 1
Skills In Calm Water

Breathing, mask clearing, buoyancy, what to do if something goes wrong. Shallow, patient, until it feels normal. Then your first open water dive.

Day 2 & 3
Open Water Dives & Certification

Three more open water dives on the reef, gradually down to 18 metres, with the skills repeated in real conditions. Final check, and you are a certified diver.

Course length: 3 days in the water, with the eLearning done before. Sea conditions can move a dive to another day, so give the course a little room in your stay, and remember the 18 hour no-fly rule after the last dive.

Who This Course Is For

First-time divers from 10 years who can swim and are medically fit. Couples who want to dive together on future holidays. Families, with the children kept in smaller groups. And people staying on La Palma for a few days or more, because the course needs 3 days plus the no-fly window, so it is not for a cruise stop. On a port day, the try dive is the right one.

No. It is a beginner course. You need to be medically fit and able to swim 200 metres and float for 10 minutes, which is part of the course.

How long does the course take?

Three days in the water on La Palma, plus the PADI eLearning theory that you complete online at home before you arrive.

What is the minimum age?

Ten years old. Divers aged 10 to 14 earn the Junior Open Water certificate, which upgrades automatically at 15. Under 18s need a parent or guardian signature.

Is the certification valid everywhere?

Yes. You become a PADI Open Water Diver for life, certified to dive to 18 metres with a buddy anywhere in the world.

Course Booking & Cancellation Policy

Deposit & Payment

  • You pay a small deposit with Club Canary to reserve your place and your instructor.
  • The balance is paid at the dive centre before the course starts, cash or card.
In short: cancel early and it is free. Cancel late or do not show up, and you pay the full price. The dive centre reserves your instructor, your gear and your place, and charges us for it either way, so the deposit alone never covers a late cancellation.

Cancellation

  • Free cancellation up to 48 hours before your start time, or 72 hours for groups of 5 or more, by emailing office@clubcanary.com. Your deposit comes back in full.
  • 24 to 48 hours before: you lose your full deposit. No exceptions.
  • 12 to 24 hours before: you lose your deposit and pay 60% of the remaining balance. We send you a payment link.
  • Less than 12 hours before, a no-show, or arriving too late: you lose your deposit and pay the full remaining balance (100%). We send you a payment link.
  • PADI eLearning already activated is not refundable. Once the course has started, no refunds are possible; if you stop early, the instructor can issue a referral so you finish the open water dives elsewhere.

The Only Exception

  • A real doctor or hospital paper that says you cannot take part, dated before the activity or the same morning. It covers the person named on it, not the whole group. Feeling unwell without it is not enough for a refund. We know this is strict, and it is the only way we can protect against last-minute cancellations.

Weather & Sea

  • Sea conditions may move a dive to another day or another site. The instructor decides, and the dive centre and Club Canary coordinate the new plan with you. If the course cannot be completed because of the sea, you get a referral for the remaining dives.

Medical & Conduct

  • You must be medically fit to dive per the PADI Medical Statement. If a doctor's signature is needed and not provided, the course cannot start and the deposit is not refunded. Check with us before you book if you are unsure.
  • Students who ignore safety instructions may be refused continuation without a refund.

Complaints, On The Day Only

  • Any issue must be raised with the dive staff on the day. Club Canary is not on site and cannot process complaints or refunds after the course.
Club Canary is the booking agent, a licensed local PADI dive centre runs the course. By booking, you accept this policy.
One more thing. Every booking here comes with a free Club Canary collectible card. We email the digital version, and the physical card is printed at our Costa Adeje office to collect in person, or posted when you book two or more. See The Collection.

Questions, dates or a higher course? Message our local team on WhatsApp, open daily 08:00 to 22:00.

Club Canary's Final Word

Real talk from your local team in the Canary Islands

If you are going to get your diving licence, get it somewhere with clear water, warm days and an instructor who is not splitting attention between eight students. La Palma ticks all three. The water is the clearest in the Canaries, the groups are three at most, and the centre teaching you also trains the instructors. That is as good as a beginner course gets.

Do the theory at home, arrive with it done, and your days here are all in the water. Four open water dives on a reef that drops into the blue, a certificate that works anywhere in the world, and an island that is quiet enough to actually rest in between. Book it for the start of your stay, because of the no-fly rule, and leave the last evening for the stars.

Learn to dive in La Palma, with three people and one instructor. Then come back for the Advanced.
