Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are all about the same distance. From Puerto de la Cruz it is a bit shorter and a lot steeper.
Picked up at the hotel, the driver does the mountain, you do the photos. The guide handles the viewpoints and the timing. For most people this is the answer.
Take the TF-21 from Vilaflor, the prettiest road up. Fill the tank in Vilaflor, there is no fuel in the park. Be at the cable car before 09:30 or you will not park.
Public bus from Costa Adeje and Las Americas to the cable car and back in the afternoon. Cheap, slow, and you are tied to its timetable. Line 348 does the same from Puerto de la Cruz.
Fine for a sunrise or a sunset with no bus around. For the price of two taxi rides you get a private tour with a guide, so compare first.
Parking, Cable Car, Permit, Cold And Views
The six things people ask us at the office every week, answered the way we answer them at the desk.
Parking at Teide
The cable car car park is free and small. In the morning it is full by 09:30 to 10:00 and the police close the road entrance, you then park along the road and walk, or come back after 16:00.
Roques de Garcia and the Parador have their own car parks, same story at midday. This is the number one reason people switch to a tour.
The cable car
It runs from 2,356 m to 3,555 m in about eight minutes. Book the time slot online before you go, walk-ups wait for hours in high season. It stops when the wind is strong, so keep a backup plan.
From the top station the viewpoints of La Fortaleza and Pico Viejo are free walks of 20 to 30 minutes, no permit needed.
The summit permit
The last 163 metres to the crater, trail 10 Telesforo Bravo, need a free permit from the national park. They are gone weeks ahead in season. The guided summit hike on this page includes the permit, the cable car and the guide.
Without a permit you can still reach the top on foot before 09:00 or after 17:00, which in practice means a night hike up Montana Blanca for sunrise. That is the hard way.
Temperature and what to wear
Count on 10 to 15 degrees less than the coast. Summer at the cable car is 15 to 20 degrees by day, winter is close to zero with snow and ice on the paths. At the top station it is always cold and windy.
Bring a warm layer, closed shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen, the sun at 3,500 m burns in winter too. Go slow the first half hour, the altitude is real.
The five viewpoints
- Roques de Garcia and the Cinchado rock, the postcard, 10 minutes from the Parador
- Llano de Ucanca, the flat plain below the Roques, best in the late light
- Minas de San Jose, the pumice dunes, the Mars photos
- Mirador de Chio, the black lava rivers of the 1798 eruption
- La Fortaleza, from the top station, the north coast and La Palma on a clear day
The Teide shadow
At sunrise and sunset the volcano throws a perfect triangle of shadow over the sea and the clouds, the longest shadow cast over water in the world. Best seen from the cable car top station at sunset, or from the summit at sunrise.
The shape is a triangle even though the mountain is not, because the shadow stretches to the horizon. Photographers, this is your shot.
A Film Set And An Observatory
The Canadas look like another planet, so Hollywood has used them as one. Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans were shot between the Roques, and One Million Years B.C. put Raquel Welch in front of the volcano in 1966.
On the Izana ridge, run by the Canary Islands astrophysics institute, with solar telescopes from half of Europe. The sky here is protected by law against light pollution.
1909, from Chinyero on the west flank, nine days long. Teide itself last erupted in 1798 at Pico Viejo, the black lava you see from Mirador de Chio.

Teide Questions, Ehrliche Antworten
Wie hoch ist Teide?
Mount Teide is 3,718 metres high, the highest point in Spain and the highest peak in the Atlantic islands. The cable car takes you to 3,555 metres. The last 163 metres to the crater need a free permit from the national park, which the guided summit hike on this page includes.
How do I get to Teide National Park from Costa Adeje?
Four ways: a tour with hotel pickup, your own car on the TF-21 through Vilaflor in about one hour and fifteen minutes, the TITSA bus 342 once a day, or a taxi. Most guests take a tour, because the parking at the cable car is full by mid morning and the driver knows where the good viewpoints are.
Is there parking at Teide National Park?
Yes, free car parks at the cable car, at the Roques de Garcia and at the Parador, but they are small. In season the cable car car park is full between 09:30 and 10:00 and the entrance is closed, so you park along the road and walk. Arrive early, come after four in the afternoon, or take a tour and skip the problem.
Do I need to book the Teide cable car in advance?
Yes. Book a time slot online before you go, walk-up tickets can mean hours of waiting in high season. The cable car stops when the wind is strong, so check the morning of your visit and keep a backup plan like the Roques de Garcia walk.
Do I need a permit to climb Teide?
Only for the summit trail from the cable car top station to the crater. The permit is free but limited and it is gone weeks ahead in season. Without a permit you can still reach the top on foot before nine in the morning or after five in the afternoon, which means a night hike. The guided summit hike includes the permit, the cable car and the guide.
How cold is it in Teide National Park?
Count on 10 to 15 degrees less than the coast. In summer the cable car base is 15 to 20 degrees by day, in winter it is close to zero with snow and ice on the paths, and the top station is always cold and windy. Bring a warm layer and closed shoes, even in August.
What should I wear to Teide?
Layers. A warm jacket, long trousers, closed shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. The sun at 3,500 metres burns faster than at the beach, also in winter. For a stargazing tour add a hat and gloves, the guides usually bring blankets but your feet are your problem.
What is the best time to visit Teide National Park?
Early morning for the parking and the light, late afternoon for the Teide shadow, and night for the stars. Spring and autumn have the most stable weather. Winter can bring snow and road closures, summer brings the crowds, so book the cable car and the tours ahead in both.
Can I visit Teide with children?
Yes. The bus tours, the cable car and the short walks at the Roques de Garcia are fine for families. The altitude can give small children a headache, so take it slow and drink water. The summit hike and the downhill bike tour have minimum ages, which are shown on each activity page.
What is the Teide shadow?
At sunrise and sunset the volcano throws a perfect triangle of shadow over the sea and the clouds, the longest shadow cast over water in the world. The shape is a triangle even though the mountain is not, because the shadow stretches to the horizon. Best seen from the cable car top station at sunset.
Is Teide National Park good for stargazing?
It is one of the best places on earth for it. The sky above the park is protected by law against light pollution and the Teide Observatory sits on the Izana ridge next door. A small group stargazing tour gives you sunset, telescopes and a guide who knows the sky.
Which Teide tour is the best?
For a first visit on a budget, the half day Teide bus tour. For the full island in one day, Teide and Masca. For the night, the small group stargazing tour. For the top, the guided summit hike with permit. Not sure? Message Club Canary on WhatsApp with your hotel and your group, we tell you honestly which one fits.
Not Sure Which Teide Trip?
Tell us where you stay, who is coming and what you want to see. A real person in Costa Adeje replies with the right one, every day from 08:00 to 22:00.
