Do You Need A Licence To Drive A Boat In Gran Canaria?

For these boats, no. That is the whole point of them. Boat hire without a licence in Gran Canaria is possible because these mini catamarans sit under the engine power threshold that requires a qualification, so anyone over 18 can legally take the helm.

What you do need. To be at least 18 years old and to show a valid ID or passport at the dock. No ID, no boat, and no refund, so bring it.

What you do not need. A boating licence, any previous experience, or a captain on board. You get a briefing before you leave and then the boat is yours.

What you must not do. The person driving cannot drink alcohol. Any fine for breaking that rule is yours to pay, and it is not a small one.

Where you can go. Along the southern coast around Arguineguín, into the quiet bays. The briefing covers the limits of the area before you set off.

So if you have been searching for boating without a licence in Gran Canaria, or a boat without licence Gran Canaria offers legally, this is it. Turn up with ID, listen to the briefing, and go.

Self drive boat hire in Gran Canaria with Club Canary means renting a mini catamaran from Arguineguín harbour with no licence and no captain required. The boats take up to 6 people, prices start from 125€, and fuel is included. The person driving must be at least 18 and show valid ID or passport, and a refundable 100€ security deposit is taken at the dock. Rentals of 3 hours or more include free paddleboard and snorkelling equipment.

Small Boat Hire Gran Canaria, The Mini Catamarans

These are mini catamarans rather than speedboats: stable, easy to handle, and set up for a day on the water rather than for going fast. Each takes up to 6 people, and we have three of them, so a bigger group can book two boats and stay together.

On board: shade and sunbathing spots, a Bluetooth stereo for your own music, a freshwater shower, a central table, and a compartment with a coolbox for your food and drinks.

Fuel is included. No topping up, no surprise bill at the end.

Bring your own ice. The coolbox is there but it comes empty.

Bigger group than 12? Two boats gets you to 12. Above that, message us and we will look at the alternatives.

What It Costs

Prices start from 125€, and the full rate card for every duration is live in the booking calendar on this page. We keep the numbers there rather than in the text on purpose: a calendar is always current, and a paragraph goes out of date the moment a rate moves.

How booking works. A deposit reserves your boat and your slot. The balance is paid on arrival, in cash or by card.

The 100€ security deposit. Taken separately when you board and returned in full as long as the boat comes back in good condition and nothing is missing. It also covers the snorkel masks and the paddleboard, so keep an eye on the gear.

Longer rentals cost less per hour. The calendar shows exactly how the rate drops, and the 3-hour mark is where the free watersports gear kicks in.

Optional picnic. We can arrange food in advance from +50€, depending on group size and duration. Ask us before the day.

✅ Club Canary Best Price Guarantee

Book 3 Hours Or More And The Watersports Are Free

Worth knowing before you pick a duration. Rentals of 3 hours or more include free paddle surf and snorkelling equipment. Shorter than that and the gear is not included.

Honestly, three hours is also the point where the day starts making sense. An hour is enough to get out, look around and come back. Three hours lets you reach a quiet bay, anchor, get in the water, eat something and still not feel rushed. If you are choosing between two hours and three, take the three.

Your Day On The Water

Simple process, and the boat is available between 10:00 and 18:00.

Your Self Drive Rental, Step By Step

  • 1Before You Go

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, your ID or passport, and your own food, drinks and ice. There is a coolbox on board but it comes empty.

  • 215 Min Early

    Arrive At Arguineguín

Av del Muelle 34, Arguineguín. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot. Late arrival comes off your rental time rather than extending it.

  • 3At The Dock

    Balance, Deposit And Briefing

Pay the balance in cash or by card, leave the 100€ security deposit, show your ID, and take the briefing on how to handle the boat and where you can go.

  • 4Off You Go

    You Are The Captain

Out of the harbour and along the coast at your own pace. Your music on the Bluetooth stereo, your drinks in the coolbox, and nobody else on board.

  • 53 Hours Or More

    Anchor, Snorkel, Paddle

Find a quiet bay, drop anchor and get in. The paddleboard and snorkel gear are included on longer rentals, and there is a freshwater shower for afterwards.

  • 6Back By 18:00

    Return And Deposit Back

Back to Arguineguín, gear checked, and your 100€ returned. Simple as that.

Marine life: if you come across whales or dolphins, keep your distance and do not swim with them. It is not allowed here and the fines are steep, and they land on you rather than on us.

Who Self Drive Boat Hire Suits

Friends. Six people, your own music, your own drinks, and no crew watching. This is the version people picture when they imagine a boat day.

Couples. Quiet bays, nobody else on board, and total privacy. Considerably cheaper than a private charter for the same solitude.

Families. Stable boats, shade, a shower and a swim stop wherever you choose. Just remember the driver stays sober.

Anyone who hates group tours. No timetable, no other guests, no guide talking. You go where you want and stop when you want.

Who it does not suit: anyone wanting food, drinks and a crew laid on. For that, take a private charter with a captain instead, from 645€ for 3 hours with up to 12 guests, food and drinks included.

Club Canary's Honest Take

Real talk from your local team in the Canary Islands

Real talk: this is the boat day most people actually want. No crew, no timetable, no guide talking over your music. Six of you, a mini catamaran, your own drinks in the coolbox and the southern coast to poke around in. The fact that you need no licence at all still surprises people, and it is completely legal.

Book three hours or more if you can. That is where the free paddleboard and snorkel gear kicks in, and it is also the point where the day stops feeling like a quick spin. An hour gets you out and back. Three hours gets you a bay to yourselves.

Two honest things. You are the captain, so you do not drink, and any fine for that is yours. And there is a 100€ deposit at the dock, fully refundable, which also covers the snorkels and the paddleboard, so keep track of the gear.

If you would rather someone else drove and brought the food, take the Blue M private charter instead. Different day, different price, and we would rather point you there than have you spend your afternoon watching the fuel gauge.

Your boat, your music, your bay. Bring ice.
