Where To Surf In Tenerife
The island has everything from a soft beach break in front of the hotels to heavy reef breaks in the north. Pick the right one for your level and the day is a good one.
The surf beach of the south. Gentle, consistent waves, a sandy and rocky bottom, surf schools on the sand and the famous spots El Conquistador, La Derecha del Cartel and La Izquierda a short paddle away for when you are ready. Kaart
Small town, big wind. The beach is sandy and beginner friendly for surfing on calmer days, and it is the capital of kitesurf, windsurf and wing foil on the island. Kaart
The north option. A small town beach surfed mostly by locals, with surf schools and a very different Tenerife around it. Bigger in winter. Kaart
The north coast proper: strong tides, reef, real swell from October to March. Surf schools, rental and surf bars in the village. Not a first-wave place.
At the end of the Anaga road, a black sand beach with powerful waves and a view that explains why people drive an hour for it. Experienced surfers only.
Between the south and the east, quieter than Las Américas, with a surf camp on the doorstep. Check the forecast, it changes fast here.
When To Surf In Tenerife
You can surf here every month of the year. What changes is where, and what you are surfing with.
From October to March the Atlantic swells hit the north coast and the experts head to Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo and Taganana. The south stays softer all year, which is exactly why the beginner schools live in Playa de las Américas. Summer is small, warm and ideal for a first lesson.
The trade winds blow hardest through the summer months and El Médano fills with kites and sails. Kitesurf and windsurf schools work year round, but every lesson is wind dependent and the school confirms the day. Water temperature stays between about 19 and 24 degrees; a wetsuit is included with every lesson.
Kitesurf, Windsurf And Wing Foil In El Médano
Ask a local where to surf in Tenerife and half of them will say El Médano, and they mean wind. The bay sits under the Montaña Roja with a steady side-shore wind, a wide beach to lay out a kite, and schools that have been teaching here for years. Kitesurf is the fastest to learn with a private instructor, windsurf is the classic, and wing foil is the new one that beginners pick up surprisingly quickly. If you want to try all three plus a surfboard in one afternoon, that is the four sports session above.
Private lessons, 1 to 4 per instructor, kite control on the beach before the water. Three hours is the taster, nine hours gets most people riding.
Lessons for all levels on the spot that hosted the PWA World Cup. Daily from 10:00 to 16:00, gear and wetsuit included.
The easiest of the wind sports to start: a handheld wing, a board with a foil, and a lot of fun from the first hour. Included in the four sports session.
El Médano has surf shops for rental and repairs, the schools rent gear to riders who can show experience. Check the wind forecast before you drive.
Surf Etiquette: The Rules In The Water
Surfing comes with its own rules, and in Tenerife the locals expect you to know them. Six that keep everyone safe and friendly.
Watch the waves for a few minutes before paddling out: where they break, where the current pulls, where the others paddle out.
The surfer closest to the peak owns the wave. If someone is already riding it, you pull back. Every time.
Paddling around someone to steal position is the fastest way to lose friends in the line-up.
Beginners: stay in the whitewater zone the instructor gives you and keep clear of riders coming through.
A shout, a hand signal or a question. Nobody minds a beginner who asks; everybody minds one who does not.
No litter, no touching marine life, no leaving wax wrappers on the sand. The beach is the point.
Surf Camps And Surf Hostels In Tenerife
Staying in a surf camp or hostel puts you next to the spot, in the middle of the surf community, and usually saves money. These are the ones surfers mention to us most. We do not book accommodation, so contact them directly.
House, hostel and apartments ten minutes from Las Américas.
Very close to the beach, the natural base for the wind sports.
In the capital, for surfers heading to the north coast breaks.
Camp with lessons, boards and the south coast spots close by.
Another Adeje camp, popular with groups who come to learn together.
In the fishing village next to Costa Adeje, quiet and close to the water.
On the east coast, on the doorstep of a quieter break.
The Surf Scene: Competition, Shops And Bars
Tenerife has a real surf scene, not just lessons for tourists. If you are here at the right time, plan around it.
Worth Knowing
The World Surf League event on the beach of Las Américas, usually late February or early March. Top surfers, free to watch from the promenade, and the whole south talks about nothing else for a week.
Las Américas and El Médano have the shops: Palmbeach Surf Shop, Surf Shop Underground, Las Américas Surf Shop Second Hand, GOAT Surfing Business, Godzilla Surf Shop, TWS Outlet and Fitenia Surf Shop. Rentals, repairs, second hand boards.
La Ola Surf Bar, Friends of the Ocean, Big Wave Surf Bar, Chirinstones Surf Rock Bar and Baja Surf Café. Where the schools drink after the last lesson.
Playa de las Américas, El Médano, El Poris, Puerto de la Cruz, Punta del Hidalgo and Bajamar. The ones we book are in Las Américas and El Médano, because that is where our guests stay.
Is Surfing In Tenerife Worth It?
Yes, and for more people than you would think. The south has a soft beach break with water you can stand in, schools that teach in your language and a climate that lets you surf in January in a 3/2 wetsuit. The north has heavy reef breaks that serious surfers fly in for. And El Médano is one of the best wind spots in Europe. The honest limit: Tenerife is not Hawaii. The waves in the south are small and friendly, which is perfect for a first lesson and less exciting if you already surf well, in which case go north between October and March.
