Gids voor de cruiseshaven op de Canarische Eilanden: wat u in elke haven kunt doen, eerlijk gezegd

Most Canary Islands cruises sail the same loop: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Funchal in Madeira, Arrecife in Lanzarote and Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura, in some order, about 1,900 km in a week, most of it at night. Your daylight is for the islands. The problem is that the ports are the capitals, and the capitals are not where the good excursions start. This guide tells you, port by port, where the ship docks, how far the real island is, what honestly fits a 5, 7 or 9 hour call, what to skip, and where we meet you. Club Canary has organised shore excursions on these islands since 2019, and we would rather say no to a tour than watch you run for a gangway.

The one rule on every port day: back at the ship at least one hour before all-aboard, not before departure. Every tour we sell for cruise guests is planned backwards from your all-aboard time with that buffer. If a day looks amazing but the hours are tight, we shorten it or we tell you not to book it.

The Loop Most Cruises Sail, And Why It Matters

The six ports sit between 150 and 550 km apart, so the ship moves at night and you wake up somewhere new. That sounds like six full days, but each call is really 5 to 10 hours between the gangway opening and all-aboard. Subtract the walk through the terminal, the queue back on board and the one-hour buffer, and a "9 hour" call gives you about 7 usable hours. Plan with that number, not with the brochure number.

One more thing nobody tells you: on the Canary Islands the cruise port is in the capital, and the capital is on the opposite side of the island from the resorts and the boats. Santa Cruz de Tenerife to the whale watching marinas in the south is up to two hours in traffic. Our normal excursions, the jet skis, Siam Park, the quads, start down there, and almost no operator drives up to collect you. So this guide only lists what starts at the port or in the capital. The rest is for your next holiday, not your port day.

How To Read Your Port Call

  • Under 5 hours: the city. Walk, the square, the market, a coffee, the hop on hop off bus. Nothing with a drive.
  • 5 to 7 hours: a short private tour near the port, a taxi tour of 3 hours, the aquarium in Las Palmas, the wine lodge in Funchal.
  • 7 hours or more: the island. Teide from Santa Cruz, Timanfaya from Arrecife, the dunes from Puerto del Rosario, the 2021 volcano from La Palma.
  • Overnight in port: rare, and the only time a full-day boat trip or a guided bike tour fits.

Port 1: Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Day one on most loops. The volcano is waiting, and it is bigger than you think.

Private tour minivan in Teide National Park on a cruise excursion from Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Teide National Park, 75 minutes from the Santa Cruz cruise port and worth every one of them on a 7-hour call.

The harbour

A working capital with a fine square, Plaza de España, good shopping, the Auditorio on the seafront and a lot of offices. Nice for a walk, done in two hours. Cruise ships dock on the south side of the harbour, 5 to 15 minutes on foot to the port gates depending on the berth. The taxi rank and the tourist bus start are right there.

The island

Teide National Park above the clouds, 60 to 75 minutes by road, and the old town of La Laguna on the way back. Or the laurel forest of Anaga, 40 minutes, for people who have seen the volcano. The whale watching boats leave from the south coast, 75 minutes away, which is why we do not sell them for a port day.

What fits your hours

Under 5 hours: the square and the hop on hop off bus, 13 stops from the port. 5 to 7 hours: the bus plus La Laguna by tram from the Intercambiador. 7 hours or more: the private Teide and La Laguna tour, or the private Anaga route, your group only, timed to your ship.

Our picks

Skip this on a port day

The whale watching with the coach from Santa Cruz. Great boat, but the coach is back around 19:30, after most ships close boarding. It is for guests staying in the city. Same for Siam Park and anything in the south.

Where we meet you: The bus stop on the seafront avenue directly across from the port entrance, next to the taxi rank. The map link is on your ticket.

Port 2: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Two islands in one: green towns in the north, desert dunes in the south. Pick a side, you cannot do both.

The Bandama crater viewpoint on a Gran Canaria taxi tour from the Las Palmas cruise port
The Bandama crater, 30 minutes from the Las Palmas terminal, the first stop of the north taxi tour.

The harbour

A big port in a big city. Las Canteras, one of the best city beaches in Spain, and the Triana shopping street are ten minutes away. Most cruise guests see the city and nothing else, which is a pity, because Poema del Mar, one of the sharpest aquariums in Europe, is five minutes on foot from the terminal.

The island

North: the historic towns of Arucas and Teror and the Bandama crater, about 3 hours in a taxi tour. South: Puerto de Mogán and the Maspalomas dunes, about 5 hours, a longer drive but the postcard of the island. A private driver from the terminal, per car, not per person.

What fits your hours

Under 5 hours: Poema del Mar and the beach, both walkable. 5 to 7 hours: the north taxi tour, Arucas, Teror, Bandama. 7 hours or more: the south taxi tour to Mogán and the dunes, or the coach island tour if we can confirm the Las Palmas pickup for your date.

Our picks

Skip this on a port day

Trying to see both the north and the south. People book the dunes and Teror in one day and spend it in the car. One side, done properly.

Where we meet you: Outside the cruise terminal, where the taxi tours wait. The exact spot and your driver's name come with the ticket.

Port 3: Santa Cruz de La Palma

Het rustige eiland. Een vulkaan die in 2021 uitbarstte, een krater waar je naar kunt kijken en water zo helder dat je je voeten op tien meter afstand kunt zien.

La Palma taxi tour at a mountain viewpoint above the clouds
La Palma from above the clouds. The summit itself is too far for a port day, the crater viewpoint at La Cumbrecita is not.

The harbour

The prettiest harbour town of the loop: colonial houses with wooden balconies, a cobbled main street, the sea right at the pier. Lovely for an hour, and the ship is always in sight. Everything else is beyond it, up steep roads.

The island

The 2021 Tajogaite volcano and the Cumbre Vieja lava fields, or the Caldera de Taburiente from La Cumbrecita, by taxi tour. The green north with its laurel forest and natural pools. And some of the clearest water in the Canaries, ten minutes from the ship, for snorkelling or a first dive.

What fits your hours

Under 5 hours: the town, then snorkelling or the try dive, ten minutes away, back in time. 5 to 7 hours: the 3-hour taxi tour, volcanoes or green north. 7 hours or more: the 5-hour taxi tour that does the crater viewpoint and the 2021 volcano in one day.

Our picks

Skip this on a port day

Guided mountain bike tours and the Roque de los Muchachos summit at 2,400 metres. Both are real La Palma, both need more hours than a port call gives you, unless the ship stays overnight.

Where we meet you: At the pier exit, the taxi tour driver holds a Club Canary sign. The snorkel and dive teams send a meeting point in town, a short walk.

Port 4: Funchal, Madeira

The garden in the Atlantic. Not a Canary Island: Madeira is Portugal, 500 km north, and most Canary loops call here for a day.

Private Madeira taxi tour at a mountain viewpoint above Funchal
The viewpoints above Funchal on the Nuns' Valley taxi tour, 45 minutes from the pier.

The harbour

The nicest harbour of the cruise. A garden city with a famous market, a cable car to Monte, wine lodges a short walk from the pier and a seafront you can stroll for hours. It is easy to spend the whole day in town and never see the mountains behind it.

The island

The Nuns' Valley, Curral das Freiras, a village in a crater of green cliffs, 45 minutes up from the port, with the Pico dos Barcelos and Eira do Serrado viewpoints on the way. Or the Madeira wine story, told in a lodge that has been doing it for a century.

What fits your hours

Under 5 hours: the market, the cable car, a wine lodge visit a walk from the pier. 5 to 7 hours: the hop on hop off with the wine tasting included, or the private wine visit plus the old town. 7 hours or more: the taxi tour to the Nuns' Valley and the viewpoints, back with time for the market.

Our picks

The north coast and Porto Moniz natural pools. Beautiful, two hours each way on mountain roads, and the one day a year the tunnel closes is the day your ship sails at 17:00.

Where we meet you: At the ship for the taxi tour. The wine lodge and the bus start are a walk from the pier; the ticket has the map.

Port 5: Arrecife, Lanzarote

Another planet. Fire mountains, black vineyards, cliffs at Famara, and the quietest capital of the loop.

Timanfaya volcanic landscape on a Lanzarote island tour from the Arrecife cruise port
Timanfaya, 40 minutes from Arrecife. The reason to leave the ship.

The harbour

A small capital with a lagoon, the Charco de San Ginés, and a seafront walk. Nice for a coffee and a swim at the city beach. Honest truth: the island is the reason you are here, and the fire mountains are 40 minutes away.

The island

Timanfaya and its volcanic cones, the La Geria vineyards growing in black ash, the Famara cliffs, the old capital Teguise and the green villages of the north. In a small group 4x4 on dirt tracks, or in a minivan for eight on the smooth version.

What fits your hours

Under 5 hours: the lagoon, the beach, the market in Arrecife on Saturdays. 5 to 7 hours: ask us, the shared tours run on fixed days and times, we confirm the port pickup and the return before you pay. 7 hours or more: the 4x4 jeep safari on Tuesday and Thursday, or the small group island tour on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Our picks

Anything on a day the shared tours do not run, and the submarine on a short call: Puerto Calero is a drive from Arrecife. We say which day works when you send your ship times.

Where we meet you: Outside the cruise port exit, around 08:35 for the morning tours, confirmed per booking with the ship's hours.

Port 6: Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

A hundred beaches and nobody on them. The island tours here are gold and they book out, so plan early.

Jeep safari 4x4 on the dunes of Fuerteventura on a cruise excursion from Puerto del Rosario
The Corralejo dunes on the Fuerteventura jeep safari, pickup at the cruise port.

The harbour

A working port town with a promenade and open-air sculptures. Honest truth: not much here, and that is fine, because the dunes and the beaches are the island. The café on the seafront where our tours meet is a five-minute walk from the port.

The island

The Corralejo dunes in the north, the old capital Betancuria in the green centre, the west coast at Ajuy with its cliffs and caves, and the El Cotillo lagoons. Private or small group, with a driver who knows the quiet spots. Both popular, both booked well ahead.

What fits your hours

Under 5 hours: the promenade and a taxi to Playa Blanca beach next to the port. 5 to 7 hours: the jeep safari to the wild north, dunes, volcano and lighthouse. 7 hours or more: the small group island tour, or the private island tour with the route built around your hours.

Our picks

Skip this on a port day

The ferry day trip to Lanzarote. It exists, it is great from a hotel, and it is impossible from a ship clock.

Where we meet you: Café Atlántico on the seafront, a five-minute walk from the port, for the island tours. The jeep safari collects at the Repsol by the port. Photos of both spots are on the ticket.

Why Private Beats The Coach On A Port Day

A ship's own excursion puts fifty people on a coach with a fixed route and a fixed clock, and charges per person. A private taxi tour or minivan costs per car, so for a family of four or a group of friends it is often the same money, with the day on your terms: longer at the viewpoint, a lunch you choose, a village you want to see again. And flexibility is the safety feature. A coach breaks down and fifty people wait. A private car breaks down and we have another one there in minutes, or a taxi, or another route. That is why we push private for cruise guests, not because it costs more.

Insurance, Honestly

Independent shore excursions carry a risk the cruise line's own excursions do not: if a ship-sold tour is late, the ship waits. If an independent tour is late, it does not. We plan every tour with a buffer, we work with partners who know the ports, and in six years it has never happened to one of our guests. It still can, with us or with anyone: a serious accident on the road, a closure, a medical emergency. So take travel insurance that specifically covers missed cruise departures and independent shore excursions, read that line in the policy before you sail, and if anything ever happens we give you every document the insurer asks for, the same day.

One Message For The Whole Cruise

Five ports, five companies, five chats, nobody who knows your ship: that is how cruise excursions usually get booked. Send Club Canary one WhatsApp with your ship name and the port hours for each stop, and you get one plan, one thread, one team that holds your all-aboard times for the whole week. Groups, clubs and cruise communities get one rate for every port. All the port excursions, with prices, are here.

What To Pack For A Port Day

  • Your ship card and a photo of your passport. Spain does not ask for it on the islands, Madeira is Portugal and the port sometimes does.
  • A warm layer for Teide, the Nuns' Valley and the La Palma crater. It can be 25 degrees at the pier and 8 degrees at 2,000 metres.
  • Cash for the balance on taxi tours and for the small cafés on the islands. Cards work in the capitals, not always at a viewpoint.
  • Swimwear and a towel in La Palma and Fuerteventura, the water is the point.
  • Flat shoes with grip for Timanfaya and the Anaga forest. Dirt tracks, lava, cobbles.
  • Your all-aboard time written on your hand, not just on the ship's daily sheet in the cabin.

Fall In Love With One Island. Then Come Back.

A port day shows you one side of one island, nobody can do more in seven hours. Most of our cruise guests come back the next year for a week on the island they liked best, and that is when the whale boats, the jet skis, the stargazing and Siam Park finally fit. Until then, choose well, be back one hour early, and enjoy the only part of a cruise the ship cannot give you: the islands themselves.

Cruise Port Questions

Which ports does a Canary Islands cruise usually visit?

Most loops call at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Arrecife in Lanzarote and Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura, and many add Funchal in Madeira, which is Portugal, 500 km north. The order changes per ship and sailing. The ports sit 150 to 550 km apart, so the ship sails at night and you have the daylight in each port.

How many hours do I really have in a Canary Islands cruise port?

A port call of 8 or 9 hours on paper gives you about 7 usable hours. Subtract the walk through the terminal, the queue back on board and the one-hour buffer before all-aboard. Plan your excursion with that number. Under 5 hours is a city day, 5 to 7 hours is a short tour near the port, 7 hours or more opens the island.

Can I get from the Santa Cruz de Tenerife cruise port to Mount Teide?

Yes, with 7 hours or more in port. Teide National Park is 60 to 75 minutes by road from the port. Club Canary runs a private Teide and La Laguna tour from the port gates, planned backwards from your all-aboard time with a buffer. Shorter calls are better spent on the capital and the hop on hop off bus.

Are independent shore excursions safe, or will the ship leave without me?

The ship waits for its own excursions, not for independent ones, so the buffer matters. Every Club Canary port tour is planned to have you back at least one hour before all-aboard, with private cars where possible so a breakdown or a closed road is solved in minutes. In six years it has never happened to one of our guests, and we still recommend travel insurance that covers missed cruise departures, because no plan controls the weather or the roads.

Why does Club Canary not sell whale watching or Siam Park for a port day in Tenerife?

Because they start in the south of the island, up to two hours from the Santa Cruz cruise port, and the boats and buses return too late for a ship. The cruise ports are the capitals, the excursions start at the resorts. We only sell what starts at the port or in the capital and gets you back in time, and we say so on every page rather than taking a booking that cannot work.

Is a private taxi tour from the cruise port worth it compared to the ship's excursion?

For two or more people, usually yes. Taxi tours are priced per car, not per person, so a family of four often pays about the same as four coach seats, with a driver who stops where you want and leaves when your ship says so. The private car is also the safety feature: if something goes wrong on the road, one car is replaced in minutes, a coach with fifty guests is not.

Where do Club Canary tours meet cruise guests at the port?

At a fixed point just outside each port: the bus stop across from the port entrance in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, outside the cruise terminal in Las Palmas, at the pier exit in Santa Cruz de La Palma, at the ship in Funchal, outside the port exit in Arrecife, and at a seafront café a five-minute walk from the port in Puerto del Rosario. The exact spot, a map link and a photo come with your ticket.

Can I book all my cruise excursions in one place?

Yes. Send Club Canary one WhatsApp message with your ship name and the port hours for each stop, and you get one plan for the whole cruise, one thread, one team that holds your all-aboard times, and one rate for groups and cruise communities. Every port and every tour is on the Pagina van de cruises in de Canarische Eilanden.
