Try Diving Tenerife, Quick Facts
Try Scuba Diving in Tenerife, Your First Dive By Boat
Always wanted to try scuba diving? This is the easy way in. A beginner boat dive with no licence and no experience needed, where a certified instructor stays right beside you the whole time. You take a boat from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje out to a reef, go down to about 8 metres, and meet the real Atlantic underwater world: rays, octopus, moray eels and colourful fish, with dolphins sometimes on the boat ride. You do not even need to be a strong swimmer. Great for first-timers, couples and families. And it costs less with us than booking the same dive direct.
This is a boat dive, not a pool or a beach dive. A real reef, with an instructor holding your hand the whole way.
Your First Dive, No Experience Needed
Most beginner dives happen in a pool or from a beach, where you see sand and a few fish. This one is different. You take a boat from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje out to a real reef, and a certified instructor guides you every second you are in the water. No licence, no course, no studying. You just show up, get a clear briefing, and go and see what is down there.
You Are Held The Whole Time
On a first dive you do not swim off on your own. Staying level and calm underwater takes practice, so your instructor holds and guides you the entire dive, handles all the equipment, and keeps you safe and relaxed. That is exactly why beginners feel comfortable so fast, and why you do not need to be a strong swimmer.
🐟 What You'll See On The Reef
This reef is known for its marine life. You can regularly see rays (including bull rays and stingrays), octopus, cuttlefish, moray eels, and schools of colourful Atlantic fish. On the boat ride, dolphins sometimes pass by, though never guaranteed.
About The Turtles, Honestly
Sea turtles do live on this reef, and they are sometimes seen, which is why you will find turtle photos from our dives. But here is the honest part for a first dive. Because your instructor is holding you and you are focused on breathing and staying calm, you are not free to swim off after a turtle. Turtles are also shy, and the extra movement of a nervous beginner tends to send them away. So if one drifts past, enjoy the moment calmly from a distance, and treat it as a lucky glimpse. Come for the feeling of breathing underwater and the reef itself, and let a turtle be a bonus, not a plan.
🏊 Do I Need To Swim Well?
No, you do not need to be a strong swimmer. You wear a buoyancy jacket that floats you, and the instructor stays right beside you and handles all the equipment. You should be comfortable putting your face in the water and reasonably at ease in the sea. If you feel very anxious in water, tell us first and we will help you decide, or a calmer option may suit you better. Winter water can feel cooler, but a wetsuit is provided.

The water temperature in Tenerife varies from 18-25°C (64-77°F) throughout the year, being warmer in the summer and cooler during the winter months.
What is the visibility like when diving in Tenerife?
Visibility while diving in Tenerife typically ranges from 15-30 meters, depending on the specific location and conditions.
What types of marine life can I see while diving in Tenerife?
When diving in Tenerife you can see colourful reef fish, rays such as bull rays and stingrays, octopus, moray eels and cuttlefish, especially on the boat dive. Turtles live on the reef and are sometimes seen, which is why you'll find turtle photos from our dives. But on a first dive you are held by your instructor and focused on breathing, so you are not swimming after turtles, and a nervous beginner's movements tend to scare shy turtles away. Enjoy one as a lucky glimpse if it drifts past, and come for the reef itself. Dolphins sometimes pass by on the boat ride too.
Do I need a diving license to dive in Tenerife?
For the 'Tenerife try dive,' no diving license is required, as you'll dive with a dive master. However, to dive independently, a recognized diving certification is necessary.
Are there age restrictions for diving in Tenerife?
Divers must be at least 8 years old to join. If you're over 65, you can usually still dive with us, but we ask that you check with Club Canary first before booking so we can make sure everything is safe and suitable for you.
What are the best dive sites in Tenerife?
Tenerife has great dive sites like Abades, El Puertito and the Cathedral. This beginner try dive leaves by boat from Puerto Colón, in Costa Adeje, which is walkable from Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas. From there you go by boat to a reef that is a great spot for beginners who want to see rays, octopus and colourful fish. Because it is a boat dive rather than a shore dive, it is a proper little ocean adventure and a fun choice for first-timers.
What gear should I bring for diving in Tenerife?
Club Canary provides all necessary diving equipment. However, if you have your own wetsuit, fins, and mask, bringing them can add comfort and familiarity to your dive.
When is the best time of year to dive in Tenerife?
Summer months (June-August) are ideal for diving in Tenerife due to warmer waters and stable weather, but diving excursions are available year-round.
What is a 'Beginner’s Dive' in Tenerife?
The 'Beginner’s Dive' is a 'try dive' for first-timers, where no license is required. You will dive up to 8 meters deep with an instructor, experiencing underwater breathing and marine life observation.
What options are available for certified divers in Tenerife?
At the moment, this page only offers beginner dives with Club Canary. However, certified divers are welcome to join these trips at a discounted rate without needing to follow the full briefing—perfect if you want to accompany a friend who’s trying diving for the first time. Just contact us to arrange this. If you’re looking for certified dives with only other certified divers, we can also help set that up, but please note we don’t list those options on the website because the schedule changes every week. Feel free to reach out to us for details!
Do you provide a pickup service when I book diving in Tenerife with Club Canary?
Yes, you can add an optional pickup when booking. It costs 5€ per person, paid on the day, and includes pick-up and return to your hotel in the main areas of south Tenerife. Some further areas may cost a little more, so just contact us to check the details for your location.
What are the discounts for diving in Tenerife and what are the prices with Club Canary?
Club Canary has a better price than booking direct. The dive center's own price for the 20-minute boat dive is 95€, but with Club Canary you pay 70€. For the 40-minute boat dive their price is 115€, and with Club Canary it is 95€. On top of that, for every group of 3 people booking together you get an extra discount, so it is an easy way to save as a family or with friends.
What is the best place for booking diving in Tenerife?
Club Canary is a great choice for a try dive, especially for people without a diving licence. You go straight by boat from Puerto Colón to a fun reef where you can see rays, octopus and colourful fish, and it costs less than booking direct. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, because you wear a buoyancy jacket and the instructor holds you the whole time, but you should be comfortable in the water. If you feel very anxious in the sea, tell us first and we will help you decide.
However, you do need to have basic swimming skills and feel comfortable in the water. If you're very nervous or can’t swim well, then Club Canary’s boat dive might not be the best choice. In that case, you might prefer an easier pool dive or a gentler shore dive that stays close to the beach.
But if you want to really try diving in the ocean and see something special, Club Canary is the perfect choice!
Booking & Cancellation Policy
Deposit & Payment
- A small deposit confirms your booking and counts toward the total.
- The balance is paid on the day, cash or card.
After Your Free Window Closes
- You cancel after your free window, but more than 24 hours before? You lose your deposit. You pay nothing more.
- You cancel between 12 and 24 hours before? You lose your deposit, and you still pay 80% of the rest. We send you a payment link.
- You cancel less than 12 hours before, you do not show up, or you arrive too late? You lose your deposit, and you still pay the full rest (100%). We send you a payment link.
- Our partner reserves and charges us for your place either way, so the deposit alone can never cover a late cancellation or no-show.
The Only Exception
- The only exception is a real doctor or hospital paper that says you cannot join, dated before the activity or the same morning. Feeling unwell without it is not enough for a refund. We know this is strict, and we are sorry, but it is the only way we can protect against last-minute cancellations.
Cancellation
- Free cancellation up to 48 hours before for 1 to 3 people, or 72 hours for groups of 4 or more, by emailing office@clubcanary.com.
- Outside the free window, the deposit is lost. Between 2 and 8 hours before: deposit lost plus a fee (10€ per person for the 20-min dive, 15€ for the 40-min, or 150€ for private trips).
- No-shows, late arrivals or cancellations under 2 hours before: deposit lost plus 90% of the balance.
Departure Location
- Most trips depart from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje. If Puerto Colón is not available, the trip may run from Las Galletas instead, but only after we confirm it with you. If you prefer not to switch, you can move to another day or cancel for a refund, subject to availability.
Wildlife & Experience
- This is a real dive in the open ocean. Rays, octopus and fish are commonly seen, but wildlife is never guaranteed, and there is no refund for what nature does or does not show. Turtles live on the reef and are seen on some dives, but are never guaranteed, and on a first dive you are held by the instructor rather than swimming freely.
Complaints, On The Day Only
- Any issue must be raised with the dive staff on the day, so it can be sorted right away. Club Canary is not on site, so we cannot process complaints or refunds after the dive has taken place.
Responsibility & Health
- If you end your dive early due to fear or discomfort, no refund can be given, as diving needs calm and confidence. Follow all staff and safety instructions.
- You complete a medical form confirming you are fit to dive. Do not fly for at least 12 hours after diving.
Weather
- If conditions are unsafe, we tell you at least 1 hour before, and you choose a full refund or a reschedule.

Club Canary's Honest Take
Real talk from your local team in the Canary Islands
This is for anyone who has always been curious about diving but never got round to it. You do not need a course or a week of prep. You show up, get briefed, get on a boat, and go see what is actually down there. And you do not need to be a strong swimmer, because the instructor holds you the whole way.
We keep it honest on the wildlife: the reef reliably has rays, octopus and colourful fish, and dolphins sometimes appear on the boat ride. Turtles do live here and turn up on some dives, but on your first dive, held by your instructor and busy just breathing, you are not going to be chasing one. Enjoy a turtle if it drifts past, but come for the dive itself. Better still, our price is lower than booking the same boat dive direct with the center.
If you want to try scuba diving in Tenerife for the first time, this is the one. Not a pool, not a beach, a real reef.
