Sunset Above The Clouds, Then The Stars

The evening starts high enough to look down on the clouds. As Mount Teide changes colour, you enjoy a glass of sparkling wine and watch the sun drop over the sea of cloud. Once it is dark, the group moves higher into the park, away from every light, where the guides set up the telescopes. On a clear night you can see the Moon in detail, Saturn, double stars, distant star clusters, galaxies and nebulae, and often the Milky Way with the naked eye.

Most stargazing tours share a single telescope, so you queue for one quick look. This tour runs two telescopes and two guides, and on the VIP tour the group splits into two smaller groups at the stargazing spot. Why Teide Is One Of Europe's Darkest Night Skies

The stargazing happens high in Teide National Park, above most of the cloud layer and away from the coastal lights. The park holds an official Starlight certification for its protected night sky, and it is one of the clearest places to see the stars in Europe. It is also known as one of the finest spots on Tenerife to watch the sunset, which is exactly how this night begins.

Honest Expectations

Plan for around 3 to 5 hours in total. The start time changes with the season, always about 30 minutes before sunset, so it is earlier in winter and later in summer. It gets genuinely cold at altitude, even in summer, so bring warm layers, a jacket and closed shoes. The telescope part depends on the weather: if clouds roll in, the team reschedules you or gives a full refund.
