The Idea

You drive. The sky delivers.

Got a hire car? Skip the bus and the hour of hotel pick-ups. Meet the guide, follow the van, look up. Built for drivers.

Mountain road through the Tenerife pine forest on the way to Chío
The Road

A pine forest commute.

Chío sits on the western road up to Teide, an easy drive from the south resorts. Normal paved roads all the way.

The old Chío picnic area, no longer the meeting point for the self-drive stargazing night
The Old Spot

This is where we used to meet.

Not any more. The meeting point is now the Moeve Chio service station in the village: lit, easy to find in the dark, space to park, a toilet. The pin is on your ticket.

The guide van that self-drive guests follow from Chío into Teide National Park
The Convoy

Follow that van.

From the station you follow the guide about 20 minutes into the park, to whichever spot has the clearest sky that night.

The Picnic

Tapas before takeoff.

Canarian tapas with wine, cava, beer and soft drinks at check-in. Light on the alcohol, you are driving.

Canarian tapas with cheese and cured meats before the Teide stargazing night
The Table

A snack, not a dinner.

Cheese, cured meats, Canarian bites. Good for turning strangers into a group. Eat properly before you come.

Crescent moon above Tenerife pines as evening turns to night before the stargazing
The Twilight

The sky warms up.

A crescent moon over the pines while the dark settles in and the telescopes come out.

Guest beneath the Milky Way on a self-drive stargazing night in Teide National Park
The Stars

Worth every curve.

Celestron telescopes, a laser sky tour in English, and one of the darkest skies in Europe. Leave whenever you like at the end.

Teide Stargazing No Pick-Up, The Self-Drive Night For Drivers

Renting a car in Tenerife? Then skip the big buses, the hour of hotel pick-ups and the commentary repeated in four languages. This one is built for drivers. You meet the guide at the Moeve Chio service station in Chío, on the western road up into the park. Tapas and drinks, a proper briefing, then you follow the guide's van to a dark-sky spot inside Teide National Park for an English-only telescope session. Small group, no waiting, and you leave whenever you like at the end.

Below: the honest comparison with our cheaper self-drive night, so you pick the right one rather than the first one.

💜 Why Book With Club Canary

Reserve with a 25€ deposit and pay the remaining 30€ in cash to the guide at check-in. If the sky is not right, you reschedule or get a full refund, and the guide tells you at least 2 hours before. Real people on WhatsApp every day from 08:00 to 22:00, Best Price Guarantee and instant confirmation. Rated 4.8/5 from 1,375+ verified reviews.

55€ per person. 25€ deposit reserves your place. Meet at Chío, drive yourself.

The Teide stargazing no pick-up tour is the self-drive version of the small-group Mount Teide stargazing night. You meet the guide at the Moeve Chio service station in Chío, enjoy Canarian tapas and drinks, then follow the guide's van into Teide National Park for a laser-guided Celestron telescope session, fully in English. It lasts about 3 to 4 hours in total and costs 55€ per person, with a 25€ deposit online and 30€ paid in cash to the guide on the night.

Where We Meet, And Why It Changed

The meeting point is now the Moeve Chio service station at P.º de la Libertad 49, in the village of Chío, on the western route up into Teide National Park.

A petrol station might sound unglamorous, and it is, but it is far easier to find in the dark than a picnic area, it is lit, there is space to park and there is somewhere to use the toilet before a three-hour night out. Mobile signal inside the park is patchy, so meeting somewhere nobody can miss matters more than meeting somewhere pretty. From there you follow the guide, and the pretty part comes later.

📍 Please Use The Pin, Not The Old Address

If you booked this tour before and remember a different meeting spot, or if an old guide or blog mentions one, ignore it. The Moeve Chio station is the current meeting point and it is the one on your ticket.

Your exact meeting time is confirmed on your booking, because it shifts with the season. Roughly 18:00 to 18:30 in winter and 19:15 to 19:30 in summer.

Got A Car In Tenerife? This Is Your Stargazing Night

Check in at Chío, have some Canarian tapas and a drink, meet the guide and the rest of the group, then follow the van about 20 minutes to the spot. You get a laser-guided sky presentation and Celestron Evolution 8 telescopes, and roughly three hours after meeting you are back at your own car, free to drive home or carry on with your evening.

Nights at altitude are cold even in summer, so bring layers. Spare jackets can sometimes be lent, but do not count on it. The night depends on the sky: if the guide calls it off you hear at least two hours before and you reschedule or get your money back.

Two Self-Drive Nights, Which One Is Yours?

We run two self-drive stargazing trips, and they are not the same. Rather than let you guess, here is the difference in plain terms.

This One, Teide Stargazing No Pick-Up

55€ per person

  • Includes a picnic with Canarian tapas, wine, cava, beer and soft drinks.
  • A slightly smaller group, usually 10 to 12 and never more than 16.
  • You meet, eat, chat and get to know the group before heading up.
  • Celestron Evolution 8 telescopes and a laser sky tour, in English.

Sunset & Stargazing Tour

40€ per person

  • No picnic. You go for the sky, not the snacks.
  • A slightly larger group, though still nothing like a coach tour.
  • Also self-drive, also guided, also a real telescope session.
  • More availability, including Sundays.

🍴 Being honest about the food. The picnic is a nice extra, not a dinner. Tapas, a drink, something in your hand while the sun goes down and the group stops being strangers. It is genuinely good for the atmosphere. It will not replace a meal.

So if that sounds worth 15€ to you, book this one. If you would rather eat properly beforehand and just go for the stars, take the Sunset & Stargazing Tour and keep the difference. Both are good nights, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to sell you the dearer one.

The Self-Drive Night, Step By Step

From Chío To The Milky Way

  • 1At Your Meeting Time

    Check-In At Chío

Arrive by car at the Moeve Chio station, quick check-in with the guide, then Canarian tapas with wine, cava, beer and soft drinks, plus the briefing. Around 45 to 60 minutes.

  • 2About 20 Min

    Convoy Into Teide National Park

Driving up at night is easy in convoy. Normal paved roads, the guide's van ahead, a careful pace, and help parking when you arrive.

  • 390 To 120 Min

    Laser Sky Tour And Telescopes

An English-only laser presentation with Celestron Evolution 8 telescopes. Planets, constellations and, on a clear night, the Milky Way straight over Teide.

  • 4Anytime

    Phone Astrophotography Help

The guide can help you photograph the sky with your own phone, and often shares their own photos within 3 to 4 days. That is a free extra, not a promise.

  • 5About 3 To 4 Hours In

    Leave When You Like

Follow the guide's van back towards the south, or drive off on your own whenever you want. That freedom is the entire point of this version.

Good to know: the exact stargazing spot inside the park can move depending on cloud or wind. That is the guide chasing the clearest sky for your night, not disorganisation.

Why Self-Drive Makes Sense If You Already Have A Car

If you have already paid for a hire car, paying again for a seat on a bus is money for nothing. This is the same guide, the same telescopes and the same tapas as our main Teide night, without the pick-up routes and without the price that carries them. It is not a private tour and not a mass excursion. It sits in between, which is exactly where most people with a car want to be.

No car? Then take the guided Mount Teide stargazing tour with hotel pickup instead. Same sky, zero driving. Want the night entirely to yourselves? That is VIP private stargazing.

Teide Self-Drive Stargazing FAQ

The questions drivers ask us most before this night. Still unsure? Message our local team on WhatsApp, open daily 08:00 to 22:00.

What is the Teide stargazing no pick-up tour?

It is Club Canary's guided self-drive stargazing night in Teide National Park. You drive your own car to the Moeve Chio service station in Chío, enjoy Canarian tapas and drinks with the guide and the group, then follow the guide's van about 20 minutes to a dark-sky spot inside the park for a telescope session, fully in English. It runs about 3 to 4 hours in total and costs 55€ per person.

Do I need my own car for this Teide stargazing tour?

Yes. This version has no hotel pickup, so a rental car or your own vehicle is required. If you do not have a car, the main guided Mount Teide stargazing tour with hotel pickup is the right choice instead.

Where is the meeting point for the self-drive stargazing tour?

The meeting point is the Moeve Chio service station at P.º de la Libertad 49 in the village of Chío, on the western road up into Teide National Park. The exact Google Maps pin is on this page and on your ticket. Club Canary chose a service station on purpose: it is lit, easy to find in the dark, has space to park and a toilet before a three-hour night out, which a picnic area does not. Meeting times are between 18:00 and 18:30 in winter and between 19:15 and 19:30 in summer, and your exact time is always confirmed on your booking. If you have seen an older meeting point mentioned anywhere, ignore it and use the pin on your ticket.

Is driving up Mount Teide at night safe?

Yes. The route uses normal paved mountain roads, and guests follow the guide's vehicle from Chio to the selected stargazing location, about 20 to 30 minutes. Drive carefully, keep a safe distance and follow the guide's instructions.

How long does the Teide self-drive stargazing experience last?

About 3 to 4 hours from the meeting point: roughly 45 to 60 minutes for check-in, tapas and the briefing at Chio, a 20 minute convoy drive, and 90 to 120 minutes of real stargazing time under the telescopes.

Are tapas and drinks included?

Yes. Canarian tapas with wine, cava, beer and soft drinks are included at check-in with the guide before the group heads up into the park. Club Canary will be honest with you about it though: this is a picnic, not a dinner. It is a nice extra and the eating together is what turns a group of strangers into a group, but do not skip your evening meal for it. Any alcohol served is light and entirely optional, since you drive your own car afterwards.

What telescopes are used during the tour?

Professional Celestron Evolution 8 telescopes, combined with a laser-guided sky tour. The guide shows planets, constellations and, on clear nights, the Milky Way over Teide.

How large is the group and what language is used?

Usually 10 to 12 guests in total, with a maximum of 16. The whole experience runs only in English, with no mixed-language commentary, which keeps the night calm and easy to follow.

Is this cheaper than a stargazing tour with hotel pickup?

Yes. This self-drive night is 55€ per person and costs less than the version with hotel pickup, because the transport is removed and nothing else changes: same guide, same Celestron telescopes, same tapas. If you already have a rental car it is the better value. Club Canary also runs an even cheaper self-drive option, the Sunset & Stargazing Tour at 40€, which has no picnic and a slightly larger group. And if you have no car at all, the guided Mount Teide stargazing tour with hotel pickup is the right choice instead.

What happens if the weather is cloudy?

The guide monitors conditions before every tour. If the night is not safe or not worth it, you are notified at least 2 hours before the start and you choose between a free reschedule or a full refund. No message means the tour runs.

Can I leave independently after the stargazing session?

Yes. After the telescope session you can follow the guide's van back toward South Tenerife or drive off independently whenever you like. That freedom is one of the main reasons drivers choose this version.

Why book the experience through Club Canary?

Club Canary offers local support, easy deposit booking and clear information before the tour. You receive fast confirmation and assistance from a Tenerife-based team available every day from 08:00 to 22:00, plus a Best Price Guarantee.

How much does the self-drive stargazing tour cost, and how do I pay?

55€ per person, and children pay the same as adults. You reserve your place with Club Canary by paying a 25€ deposit online, then pay the remaining 30€ per person in cash directly to the guide at check-in in Chío. Bring the cash with you, there is no card machine on a mountain. The deposit counts towards the total, it is not an extra charge. Places are limited to 16 people, so booking ahead is sensible, especially in the busier months.

Booking last minute or a date looks full? Check with us first, we can often still fit you in. The Sunset & Stargazing Tour usually has more availability, including Sundays.

Booking Policy

Deposit And Payment

You confirm your place with a 25€ deposit per person, which counts towards the total. The remaining 30€ per person is paid in cash to the guide at check-in in Chío. The deposit holds your reservation but does not cover a late cancellation or a no-show. Check your confirmation email after booking and tell us immediately if anything is wrong.

Cancellation

Individuals and groups under 5: free cancellation up to 48 hours before.

Groups of 5 or more: free up to 4 days before.

Groups of 10 or more: free up to 7 days before.

After the free window the deposit is lost and further costs may apply. No refund for a no-show or a same-day cancellation.

Late Cancellation Fees

Individuals and groups under 5: cancelling 11 to 47 hours before means losing 50% of the deposit plus 50% of the balance. Under 11 hours means the full deposit plus the full balance.

Groups of 5 or more: between 24 hours and 3 days before, the 50% rule. Under 24 hours, the full amount.

Groups of 10 or more: between 48 hours and 6 days before, the 50% rule. Under 48 hours, the full amount.

Weather

The night depends on the sky. If the guide decides it is not safe or not worth it, you reschedule or get a full refund. We aim to tell you at least 2 hours before the start time. No message means the tour runs. The exact spot inside the park may change with cloud or wind, and self-drive guests follow the guide's van for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Late Arrivals

Arrive on time at the Moeve Chio station. Once the group leaves, reception inside the park is limited. If you are late we will try to help, and in the worst case you can drive on at your own cost to catch up. If joining is not possible, the late cancellation fees apply. Keep the phone number you gave us reachable, the guide usually uses WhatsApp.

Responsibility And Conduct

This self-drive option joins our small-group stargazing night, and Club Canary works with licensed local partners. Follow the safety instructions and drive carefully in convoy. Disrespectful behaviour can mean exclusion without a refund. Raise anything on the night directly with the guide, that is the fastest route to a fix.

Photos

The guide often shares photos within 3 to 4 days. It is a free extra rather than a paid service and cannot be guaranteed. The guide messages you directly, so there is no need to contact the office about it.

Looking After Teide

No litter, keep to marked areas, and keep light and noise down. Bins are available in the park. Bring your own warm layers where you can, spares are limited.

Assistance

Questions or changes? Email info@clubcanary.com. Refunds on the night need the guide's approval, since the balance is paid directly to them.

By booking with Club Canary you accept this policy. When someone cancels late or does not turn up, we have already turned other guests away and the guide has held the night. Thanks for understanding.

Comparing options? See all stargazing trips in Tenerife, the cheaper Sunset & Stargazing Tour at 40€, the guided tour with hotel pickup, or make it private with VIP stargazing.

Questions or a special request? Message our local team on WhatsApp. We reply fast.

Club Canary's Honest Take

Real talk from your local team in the Canary Islands

Got a car? This is the one. Same guide, same Celestron telescopes, same sky as our main night, minus the pick-up routes and minus the price that pays for them.

The choice worth thinking about is between our two self-drive nights. This one is 55€ with a picnic and a slightly smaller group. The Sunset & Stargazing Tour is 40€ without the food. We will be straight with you: the tapas are a nice touch and the eating together is what turns a group of strangers into a group, but it is not a dinner. Worth 15€ to some people and not to others.

No rental car? Book the main guided tour with hotel pickup instead. Want the sky entirely to yourselves? The private version exists.

One deposit, one easy drive, and a sky that makes people go quiet. Built for drivers.
