No hire car, no taxi, and no hotel pickup at 07:30. Most excursions in Tenerife need transport organised first. This one does not, which is why Club Canary recommends it for guests who are staying in Las Américas without a car.

The tour also finishes back at the same place, so you walk home afterwards.

There are three routes and they all cost the same, last three hours, and leave from Playa de las Américas.

• Sunset Tour (18:30): the one Club Canary recommends. The Teide route timed for golden hour, with better light, cooler air and quieter roads.
• Teide Day Tour (13:30): the same route in full daylight, all on road, with the clearest views of the volcano.
• Coastal Off-Road Tour (13:30): the most adventurous, with around an hour of real off-road driving near Granadilla.

Pick the sunset if you can get it. Pick the coastal one if the driving matters more to you than the view.

The Teide Day Tour and Coastal Off-Road Tour depart at 13:30. The Teide Sunset Tour departs at 18:30, shifting slightly through the year with the sunset.

The timing suits a normal holiday. The day tours leave you a free morning by the pool, and the sunset tour gets you back in Playa de las Américas in time for a late dinner.

These buggies drive on public roads, so the operator checks every driver before departure. Here is exactly what works.

• Physical licence card: always fine. This is the simple, safe option.
• Digital licence: accepted only if it can be checked live in your country's official app, such as miDGT in Spain, the DVLA check code in the UK or MyJPJ in Malaysia, together with your passport.
• A photo or screenshot of your licence is not accepted.
• Licences from outside the EU (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Malaysia and similar) are accepted when the card is printed in Latin letters. An International Driving Permit alongside it avoids any discussion at the desk.
• Automatic-only licences are fine. The buggies are automatic.

Drivers must be 21 or older and hold a full car licence.

Passengers do not need a licence and there is no minimum age for them beyond the size rules: a child must be 1.2 m tall or over to ride in a 2 person buggy, or 5 years or older to sit in the back of the 4 person buggy with an adult.

Drivers can swap during the tour if both people hold a valid licence.

No. The Moto CF 1000cc Sport buggies are automatic, so if you can drive a car you can drive one of these. There are no gears to worry about.

You get a full safety briefing before you set off, and a professional guide leads the whole route. Most people booking the Ultimate Buggy tours through Club Canary have never driven a buggy before.

A maximum of five buggies, which is around 10 people. That is a deliberate choice by the operator, not a shortage.

These routes pass through small mountain villages, and long convoys of buggies are hard on the people who live there. Keeping groups small keeps the tours welcome.

It also makes the tour better: the guide can watch everyone, there is no queue at the viewpoints, and you are not driving through the dust of twelve buggies ahead of you.

No food is included, and you should bring water, especially on the day tours.

The sunset tour usually includes a drink at the viewpoint during the sunset stop. Treat that as a nice extra rather than a reason to book, as the operator can change it without notice and it is not grounds for a refund.

Sunglasses and snoods are available to buy at the meeting point in Playa de las Américas.

Completely different from the weather in Playa de las Américas, and that catches people out.

You start at sea level in shorts and sunshine. The route climbs to around 2,000 metres, where it is normally 10 to 15 degrees colder. On the way up you often drive straight through a layer of cloud, which can be damp and grey for a few minutes, and then you come out above it into bright sun with the clouds sitting below you. That part is one of the best bits of the tour.

At the top it can be warm and still, cold and windy, or occasionally a little rainy, sometimes all in the same afternoon. It is genuinely unpredictable up there, and no forecast for the resort tells you what Teide is doing.

So bring a jacket or a jumper, even if it is 28 degrees on the beach. The sunset tour is the coolest of the three because you are at altitude as the sun goes down. The operator has jackets if you need one, but your own layer is more comfortable.

The tour runs in most conditions. If the guide decides it is genuinely unsafe, Club Canary reschedules you free of charge or refunds you in full.

Closed shoes and clothes that can get dusty. No flip-flops, especially on the coastal off-road tour.

Bring water, sun cream, sunglasses and your physical driving licence if you are driving.

The sunset tour reaches high altitude where it gets cool once the sun drops, so bring a layer. The operator has jackets, goggles and gloves if you need them.

Free cancellation up to 72 hours before your tour, or up to 6 days before for groups of 3 or more buggies. After that it gets strict. 48 to 72 hours before: 25€ per buggy.
24 to 48 hours before: you lose your deposit.
12 to 24 hours before: deposit lost plus 85% of the remaining balance.
Under 12 hours, a no-show, or arriving too late: deposit lost plus the full remaining balance. For groups of 3 or more buggies, every window above is doubled.
The reason is capacity. Only five buggies go out per tour, so one booking is a large part of the day and we turn other guests away to hold it. A buggy left empty cannot be resold a few hours before.

One thing to know before booking a stag or hen group: anyone who arrives under the influence of alcohol is refused without a refund, and the buggies drive on public roads so there is no flexibility on this. Plan the buggy tour for before the night out, not after.
