Windsurfing Tenerife – FAQ
What is windsurfing?
Windsurfing is an exciting water sport combining elements of surfing and sailing. It involves standing on a board and maneuvering it using a sail attached, harnessing the power of the wind.
How difficult is it to learn windsurfing in Tenerife, especially in El Medano?
Learning to windsurf in Tenerife, particularly in El Medano, can be a thrilling experience. El Medano is known for its consistent winds and good weather, making it an ideal place for beginners and intermediates. With patience and practice, you can learn to windsurf here, though the learning curve varies for each individual.
Do I need to be physically strong to participate in windsurfing?
Physical strength helps, but isn’t the sole factor in windsurfing. Balance, flexibility, and technique are also crucial. Being in good physical shape can enhance your endurance and ability to manage the sail.
How do I ensure the best conditions for my windsurfing lessons in Tenerife?
To ensure the best conditions, check the weather and wind forecasts, and plan your lessons during optimal times. Mornings in Tenerife are usually calmer, with winds picking up later in the day. Also, consult with local instructors for the best spots and timing.
Where can I book windsurfing lessons in Tenerife?
Head to El Médano. It’s the best windsurfing spot in Tenerife, sitting on the south coast where the trade winds are strong and consistent year-round. Local windsurfing schools in El Médano offer lessons for beginners and experienced riders.
If you want to combine windsurfing with other activities in Tenerife and have real human support every day of your trip, Club Canary can sort everything in one place. We’re a local Tenerife experiences company and we’re available seven days a week.
Who would you recommend windsurfing lessons to?
We especially recommend windsurfing lessons to people who have already tried the sport before and would like to improve their skills and confidence on the water. Tenerife is one of the most popular destinations in the world for water sports, making it a fantastic place for windsurfers who want to enjoy ideal wind conditions and learn more from experienced local instructors. However, beginners are also welcome. Windsurfing in Tenerife is perfect for guests who want to make this sport a big part of their holiday experience. Since lessons depend on wind and weather conditions, schedules are arranged directly with the instructor, which can make it more difficult to combine with many other activities.
What should I bring to my windsurfing lesson?
We recommend bringing swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, water, and comfortable beachwear. Wetsuits and the necessary windsurfing equipment are usually included in the lesson.
Is windsurfing safe?
Yes, windsurfing is very safe when practiced with professional instructors and under suitable weather conditions. However, no ocean activity can ever be guaranteed to be 100% safe, as the sea and weather conditions can change quickly. For this reason, we always recommend going with an instructor, even for advanced riders. If it is your first time in Tenerife, you may not know the local conditions, wind patterns, currents, or the best spots to practice, so it is always better to have a professional with you.
How long does it take to learn windsurfing?
Most beginners can learn the basic techniques and start sailing during their first lessons. However, becoming fully confident and independent on the board usually takes several sessions and regular practice.

What Can You Expect From Windsurfing Lessons in Tenerife?
🔥 How Your Lesson Works
Step 1 – Meet Your Instructor on the Beach You start with a short briefing on the beach. Equipment fitted, wind basics explained, safety covered. Your instructor reads your level from the start and adapts the session accordingly. | Step 2 – Learn at Your Own Pace Balance, sail control, steering – you build the foundations properly before going further into the water. Nobody rushes you. Progress depends on your confidence and the day’s conditions. | Step 3 – Guided Supervision Throughout Your instructor stays with you the whole time. Windsurfing takes practice – beginners shouldn’t expect to ride solo immediately. That’s normal. The goal is progress, not perfection on day one. | Step 4 – Progress Based on Your Package The more hours you have, the further you go. 3 hours gets you started. 6 hours builds real confidence. 9 hours gives you a proper foundation to ride more independently. |
⏱️ Lessons run daily from 10:00 to 16:00 in El Médano. Schedule set directly with your instructor based on wind conditions.
