Be Your Own Captain In Costa Adeje
This is self-drive boating at its simplest: you take the wheel, with no license needed as long as the driver is 18 or over, sober, and has valid ID. First time driving a boat? No problem. The team gives you a practical briefing at Puerto Colón, explains the controls and the permitted area, and helps you out of the harbour, so you head off feeling confident. No experience required.
It is popular with couples, families and groups of friends who want real freedom on the water and their own private boat for a few hours. Cruise the permitted Costa Adeje coastline, drop anchor in a calm spot, and swim or snorkel straight off the boat. If you would rather have a captain, a larger vessel, or a full selection to choose from, browse our boat hire in Tenerife instead.

Please Use Your Common Sense
Let us keep it real for a second. A self-drive boat is a lot of fun, but you are the captain, so a bit of common sense goes a long way. You may have seen the videos online of people getting into trouble near the rocks or caught in the swell. Do not be that person. If the crew tells you to stay in a certain area, stay there, and if the sea looks rough, do not push your luck. It is not worth the money, the danger to you and your group, or the risk to other people in the water.
What You Are Responsible For
Here is the honest part: once you take the boat out, what happens is on you. The operator gives you a full safety briefing and sets the rules, the boat is tracked by GPS, and they can see where you went. Club Canary handles your booking and is not on the boat, so anything on the day is between you and the operator's team at the harbour. That is who to speak to if something comes up.
What Is Not Refundable
So you know up front: if you cancel late, do not show up, or turn up too late (including if you forget your ID and have to go back), you lose the deposit and still owe the rest of the price, because the operator reserves and charges us for your boat either way. Ending your trip early or feeling seasick when the sea is safe are also not refundable. The deposit and balance are shown clearly before you book, so there are never any surprise charges, just be sure you can make your slot. Full details are in the Policy section below.

Self-Drive Boat Information
- No boating license is needed, but the driver must be 18 or over, completely sober, and have valid ID. You get a safety briefing and driving explanation before you set off, so no experience is required. The operator can refuse the rental if the group is unsafe or does not follow the briefing.
- Bring your Club Canary ticket and valid ID, plus cash for the balance on arrival (cash is preferred for a faster check-in). Pack swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and your own snacks and drinks for the fridge.
- You explore the permitted Costa Adeje coastline, not anywhere you like, as there are protected marine areas and navigation rules. The team suggests good spots to cruise or stop based on the conditions that day. This is not a whale watching trip, so keep a safe, legal distance from any whales or dolphins.
- Meet at Puerto Colón marina, Costa Adeje. Your confirmation gives the exact pontoon and meeting instructions. Please arrive 15 minutes early for check-in and the briefing. You come by your own transport, there is no pickup. Parking is around 1.20€ per hour.
- Free cancellation or reschedule up to 3 days (72h) before. Closer than that, fees apply, see the Policy section below.
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions people ask us most about self-drive boat hire with no license. Still unsure? Message the Club Canary team on WhatsApp, we reply fast.
Do I need a boating license to rent a self-drive boat in Tenerife?
No, you do not need a boating license. This is a self-drive boat in Tenerife with no license needed, as long as the driver is 18 or over, completely sober, and has valid ID. Before you leave Puerto Colón, the team gives you a short safety briefing and shows you how to drive, so no boating experience is required to rent a boat here without a license.
I have never driven a boat before. Can I still book the no-license boat rental?
Yes, and most people who book this no-license self-drive boat in Costa Adeje have little or no boating experience. It is made to be easy: the team at Puerto Colón gives you a practical briefing, explains the controls and the permitted area, and helps you out of the harbour, so you set off feeling confident. This is not a professional boating lesson, just a clear, friendly briefing.
How much does self-drive boat hire in Tenerife cost, and is fuel included?
Prices are for the whole boat, not per person: from 155€ for 2 hours, 235€ for 3 hours, 305€ for 4 hours, 425€ for 6 hours, and 500€ for 8 hours. Fuel is included on every trip. With Club Canary you pay a small deposit online and the balance on arrival at Puerto Colón, and you get our Best Price Guarantee.
How many people can join, and who is allowed to drive the boat?
Your self-drive boat takes up to 6 guests, so it suits couples, families and small groups of friends. Groups of 5 or 6 pay a small extra deposit, and for 6 we ask you to message Club Canary first. The driver must be 18 or over, sober, and hold valid ID, while everyone else can simply relax and enjoy the ride.
Where can we go when we drive our own boat in Costa Adeje?
You explore the permitted Costa Adeje coastline at your own pace, stopping to swim and snorkel in calm bays. There are protected marine areas and navigation rules, so it is not a case of going anywhere you like. The team suggests good places to cruise or stop based on the sea conditions on the day of your self-drive boat rental.
What is included with the no-license boat rental in Tenerife?
Every self-drive boat rental in Tenerife comes with fuel, a sunshade, life jackets, snorkel gear, a fridge, and Bluetooth for your own music. You just bring your own snacks, drinks and ice. There is no captain, as you drive the boat yourself, and food and drinks are not included.
Can we watch whales and dolphins from the self-drive boat?
This is a self-drive coastal rental, not a whale watching trip. If you happen to see whales or dolphins, that is a lovely bonus, but you must keep a safe, legal distance and must not approach them, as they are protected. If whale and dolphin watching is your main goal, Club Canary has separate whale watching trips in Tenerife that are better suited.
Can we do a sunset trip, or is there a more fun boat option?
Yes, a sunset self-drive trip is a popular choice and is a small add-on to the normal price, with an evening departure from Puerto Colón. And if you want something similar but even more fun, Club Canary also rents a floating car boat in Tenerife, a novelty boat that is a real talking point. It costs a little more, but it is hard to beat for a laugh with your group.
What happens if the weather is bad or someone feels seasick?
Your safety comes first. If sea conditions are officially unsafe, the operator can cancel or reschedule your Tenerife self-drive boat, and you get a new slot or a full refund. If conditions are safe but you personally feel seasick and choose to return early, a refund is normally not given, as this is a risk of any boat trip.
Where do we meet in Puerto Colon, and how do we get there?
You meet at Puerto Colón marina in Costa Adeje, and your Club Canary booking confirmation gives the exact pontoon and meeting instructions. Please arrive 15 minutes early for check-in and the safety briefing before your self-drive boat rental. You come by your own transport, as there is no pick-up, and there is parking at the marina.
What am I responsible for, and can I get a refund if something goes wrong?
Once you take the self-drive boat out, you are responsible for how you drive and where you go, so please follow the operator's safety briefing and stay in the permitted area, even if the sea looks tempting elsewhere. The boat is tracked by GPS, and Club Canary is not on board, so any issue on the day is handled by the operator's team at the harbour. Refunds are not given for turning up late (including forgetting your passport or ID, which you must bring), ending early, or seasickness in safe conditions. If you would rather not have that responsibility, a private boat trip with a captain takes all the pressure off, and is often better value than people expect.
Booking & Cancellation Policy
Deposit & Payment
- You reserve with a deposit online, and pay the rest on arrival at Puerto Colón (cash preferred for a faster check-in). The deposit is part of the total price.
Your Free Cancellation Window
- Free cancellation or reschedule up to 48 hours before your time slot, by email to office@clubcanary.com.
- Booked several boats for a big group? The free window is 4 days before, because a bigger booking is harder to refill.
After Your Free Window Closes
- You cancel after your free window, but more than 24 hours before? You lose your deposit. You pay nothing more.
- You cancel between 12 and 24 hours before? You lose your deposit, and you still pay 80% of the rest. We send you a payment link.
- You cancel less than 12 hours before, you do not show up, or you arrive too late for your slot? You lose your deposit, and you still pay the full rest (100%). We send you a payment link.
- The operator reserves your boat and time slot and charges us for it either way, so the deposit alone can never cover a late cancellation or no-show.
The Only Exception
- The only exception is a real doctor or hospital paper that says you cannot join, dated before the trip or the same morning. Forgetting your ID, turning up late, ending the trip early, or feeling seasick when the sea is safe are not exceptions. We know this is strict, and we are sorry, but it is the only way we can protect against last-minute cancellations.
Weather & Sea Conditions
- If the sea is officially unsafe and the operator cancels, you get a new slot or a full refund of your deposit, your choice. You never lose money when the trip is cancelled for safety. No message means it goes ahead as planned.
Safety On The Water
- The driver must be 18 or over, sober, with valid ID, and must follow the safety briefing and navigation rules. The operator can refuse boarding if safety rules are ignored, with no refund.
- This is not a whale watching trip. If you see whales or dolphins, keep a safe, legal distance, as they are protected.

Club Canary's Honest Take
Real talk from your local team in the Canary Islands
This is one of the most fun ways to get on the water: your own small boat, no license, no captain, just your group and the coast. People with zero boating experience do this all the time, the team shows you how it works and helps you out of the harbour, and fuel is included so there are no surprises. Couples love it, families love it, and El Puertito and the coves along the Costa Adeje coast are lovely for a swim and snorkel.
A few honest notes: it is a small, relaxed boat for cruising, not a speedboat, so come for the freedom rather than the speed. You stay inside the permitted area and follow the briefing, the driver must be sober, and it is not a whale watching trip, so keep your distance from any wildlife. If you would rather sit back with a skipper or want a bigger boat, our main boat hire page is the better place to start.
Freedom, no license, fuel included, from 155€. Message us with your group and time.
