⚓ Spanish Law Changed On 1 October 2026
You can no longer rent a self-drive boat in Spain without a boat licence. A new national rule ended the old licence-free category. It applies across the whole country, not only the Canary Islands, and it is not something any company can work around.
If you hold a licence, nothing changes. Titulín, PER or a recognised foreign licence and you can still take the boat out yourself, exactly as before.
If you do not hold a licence, the boat can still go out with a skipper on board, at 25€ per hour on top, subject to availability. Honest warning: that is a different kind of day, and for similar money a proper private boat trip is usually better value. We explain why below rather than just taking your booking.

For years you could rent a small boat in Tenerife and drive it yourself with no licence at all. That ended on 1 October 2026. This page gives you the straight version: what the rule actually says, the two ways you can still get on a boat from Puerto Colón, and our honest view on which one is worth your money. We ran this product for years, so this is experience rather than a sales pitch.

Your Three Options Now
Nothing has changed for you. Take the boat out yourself, exactly as before, same freedom and same price.
- Accepted: Titulín, PER, or a recognised foreign licence.
- From: 155€ for 2 hours, whole boat.
- We check it at booking, so nobody gets refused at the pontoon.
The same boat with a qualified skipper on board. You still pick the route and the swim stops, somebody else handles the wheel and the paperwork.
- Cost: +25€ per hour on top of the boat.
- Subject to availability, so book ahead.
- Honest note: it is not the private, just-us day the no-licence boat used to be.
Once a skipper is on board anyway, a proper private boat trip gives you a bigger boat, drinks, and a licensed crew who can legally approach whales and dolphins.

Should You Still Book This?
Straight answer, and it depends entirely on the licence.
You have a licence? Yes, book it. This is still one of the best value ways to get on the water in Costa Adeje. Your own boat, your own route, nobody else aboard, from 155€ for two hours. Nothing about the change affects you.
No licence? We would think twice. The whole appeal of this boat was the privacy. Just your group, no crew, stop where you like, nobody watching. With a skipper on board that is simply a different day, and we would rather say so than let you find out after paying.
Look at the numbers. Four hours with a skipper is 405€, about 68€ a head for six people. That lands in the same bracket as a proper private boat trip, where you get a noticeably bigger boat, drinks included, shade, and a crew licensed to approach whales and dolphins properly. This small boat cannot legally do that.
So our honest recommendation for anyone without a licence is to look at private boat trips first. If you still want this boat with a skipper, we will happily arrange it, but we want you choosing it with the full picture.
What The Rule Actually Says
Spain used to allow a small category of boats to be rented with no licence, under tight limits on size, engine power, daylight hours and distance from shore. A short briefing from the rental company was enough. That category was removed by a national rule effective 1 October 2026.
What it means in practice: every person driving a rental boat in Spain now needs a valid licence, or a qualified skipper must be on board. This is not a Canary Islands rule, not a company policy, and not something any operator can quietly ignore. Anyone still advertising "no licence needed" in Spain is either out of date or about to have a very awkward conversation at the pontoon.

Licences, Meeting Point And What To Bring
- The person driving must hold a valid boat licence. Titulín, PER or a recognised foreign licence.
- Send us a photo when you book. We confirm it with the operator before your date so nobody is turned away at the pontoon.
- No licence in the group? Add a skipper for 25€ per hour, subject to availability.
- The driver must also be 18 or over, completely sober, and carry valid ID.
- Bring your Club Canary ticket, your boat licence, valid ID, and cash for the balance (faster check-in).
- Swimwear, towel, sun cream, and your own snacks and drinks for the fridge.
- The permitted Costa Adeje coastline, not wherever you like. There are protected marine areas and navigation rules.
- The team suggests good spots to cruise or stop based on the conditions that day.
- Not a whale watching trip. If you see whales or dolphins, keep a safe legal distance. Only licensed boats may approach.
- Puerto Colón marina, Costa Adeje. Your confirmation gives the exact pontoon.
- Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in and the briefing.
- Own transport, no pickup. Parking is around 1.20€ per hour.

Do I need a boat licence to rent a self-drive boat in Tenerife?
Yes. Since 1 October 2026 a valid boat licence is required by Spanish law to rent a self-drive boat. The old licence-free category no longer exists, anywhere in Spain, including the Canary Islands.
A Titulín, a PER or a recognised foreign licence is accepted. Send Club Canary a photo of yours when you book and we confirm it with the operator before your date, so nobody gets turned away at the pontoon.
No licence? You can still go out with a qualified skipper on board for 25€ per hour extra, subject to availability.
I do not have a licence. What are my options?
Two, and we will be honest about both.
Add a skipper to this boat for 25€ per hour on top of the boat price, subject to availability. You still choose the route and the swim stops, somebody else handles the wheel.
Or take a private boat trip instead, which is what Club Canary usually recommends. Once a skipper is on board anyway, a four hour trip here costs around 405€, and for similar money a private boat trip gives you a bigger boat, drinks included and a crew licensed to approach whales and dolphins properly. This small boat cannot legally do that.
Why did the rule change?
Spain introduced a new national regulation effective 1 October 2026 that removed the category allowing small boats to be rented without any licence.
It is not a Canary Islands rule, not a company policy, and not something any operator can work around. Any company still advertising "no licence needed" boat rental in Spain is either out of date or heading for an awkward conversation at the harbour.
How much does it cost, and is fuel included?
Prices are for the whole boat, up to 6 guests, not per person. Fuel is included on every trip.
From 155€ for 2 hours, 235€ for 3 hours, 305€ for 4 hours, 425€ for 6 hours and 500€ for 8 hours. A sunset trip is a small add-on, for example 2 hours at 185€.
Need a skipper because nobody in your group holds a licence? Add 25€ per hour. So a 4 hour trip with a skipper comes to 405€ in total.
You pay a deposit online with Club Canary and the balance on arrival at Puerto Colón.
Which licences are accepted?
A Spanish Titulín (Licencia de Navegación) or PER, and recognised foreign boat licences.
If you are not sure whether yours qualifies, send Club Canary a photo before you book and we will confirm it with the operator. This takes a minute and saves the worst possible outcome, which is arriving at the pontoon and not being allowed out.
The person driving must also be 18 or over, completely sober, and carrying valid ID alongside the licence.
What happens if I turn up without a valid licence?
You will not be allowed to take the boat out, and it is treated as a no-show with no refund.
That sounds harsh and it is not the operator being difficult. Letting an unlicensed person drive is now illegal, so there is genuinely no flexibility available to them.

How many people can come, and where can we go?
Up to 6 guests on the boat, which suits couples, families and small groups of friends. Groups of 5 or 6 pay a small extra deposit.
You explore the permitted Costa Adeje coastline, stopping to swim and snorkel in calm bays. There are protected marine areas and navigation rules, so it is not a case of going anywhere you like. The team suggests good spots based on the sea conditions that day.
Can we see whales and dolphins from this boat?
Not properly, no. This is a coastal rental, not a whale watching trip. If you happen to see whales or dolphins you must keep a safe legal distance and cannot approach them, because they are protected and only licensed boats may get close.
If the wildlife is your main reason for going out, book a proper whale watching trip or a private boat trip instead. Both are licensed for it and both will show you far more.
Where do we meet, and what should we bring?
Puerto Colón marina in Costa Adeje. Your Club Canary confirmation gives the exact pontoon and meeting instructions. Please arrive 15 minutes early for check-in and the safety briefing.
Bring your boat licence, valid ID, your ticket, and cash for the balance (faster check-in). Plus swimwear, a towel, sun cream and your own snacks and drinks for the fridge on board.
You come by your own transport, there is no pickup. Parking at the marina is around 1.20€ per hour.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If the sea is officially unsafe and the operator cancels, you choose another slot or a full refund. You never lose money when the operator cancels.
If conditions are safe but you personally feel seasick and decide to come back early, a refund is not given, as that is a risk of any boat trip.
No message from us means your trip is going ahead as planned.
Booking And Cancellation Policy
The Licence, Read This First
- Since 1 October 2026 a valid boat licence is required by Spanish law for self-drive rental.
- Send a photo of your licence when you book. We confirm it with the operator before your date.
- Arriving without a valid licence means you cannot take the boat out, and that is treated as a no-show with no refund. There is no way around this and it is not the operator being difficult, it is the law.
- No licence? Add a skipper for 25€ per hour, subject to availability. Request it when booking, not on the day.
Deposit And Payment
- Reserve with a deposit online and pay the rest on arrival at Puerto Colón. Cash is preferred for faster check-in.
- The deposit is part of the total price, not an extra fee.
Free Cancellation
- Free cancellation or reschedule up to 48 hours before your slot, by email to office@clubcanary.com.
- Booked several boats for a group? The free window is 4 days, because a bigger booking is harder to refill.
After Your Free Window Closes
- 24 to 48 hours before: you lose the deposit. Nothing further is charged.
- 12 to 24 hours before: you lose the deposit and pay 80% of the remaining balance.
- Under 12 hours, a no-show, or arriving too late: you lose the deposit and pay the full remaining balance.
- The operator blocks your boat and your slot and charges us either way, so the deposit alone can never cover a late cancellation.
The Only Exception
- A genuine doctor or hospital letter dated before the trip or the same morning. Forgetting your licence or ID, arriving late, ending early, or seasickness in safe conditions are not exceptions.
Weather And Sea Conditions
- If the sea is officially unsafe and the operator cancels, you choose a new slot or a full refund. You never lose money when the operator cancels.
On The Water
- Follow the safety briefing and stay inside the permitted area. The boat is GPS tracked.
- The operator can refuse boarding if safety rules are ignored or the driver is not sober, with no refund.
- Club Canary is the booking platform and is not on the boat. Anything on the day is handled by the operator's team at the harbour.

We will be blunt, because you came here for a boat with no licence and we would rather be useful than polite.
If you have a licence, book it. This is still a lovely few hours. Your own small boat, the Costa Adeje coast, a swim at El Puertito, nobody else aboard. From 155€ it is hard to beat for value and nothing about the rule change touches you.
If you do not have a licence, think carefully. The reason people loved this boat was the privacy. Just your group, stopping where you fancied, nobody watching. Put a skipper on board and that is honestly a different day, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to get the booking.
