What To Expect On Your Shogun Boat Trip

The Shogun is a classic old wooden sailing ship with a real pirate-ship style look, a favourite boat trip in the south of Tenerife. Here is how the 5-hour day goes from start to finish, so you know exactly what is coming.

1

Set Sail, 11:00

Board at Puerto Colón, Gate 14, and set off on the Shogun along the south coast of Tenerife.

2

Whale Watching

Sail out to look for pilot whales and dolphins in the wild, with the crew helping you spot them.

3

The Cliffs And Swim Stop

Cruise past the huge Los Gigantes cliffs, then anchor for a swim in the clear blue ocean.

4

Lunch And Sail Back

Enjoy a hot lunch with drinks on board, then relax on deck as you sail back to port.

Shogun Whale Watching, What You Will See

The main goal of the Shogun boat trip is to see pilot whales and dolphins, and the good news is you normally do. Because this is a full 5-hour whale watching trip, your chances are much stronger than on a quick 3-hour trip, there is simply more time to find them. Pilot whales live off this coast all year, and dolphins are common too. You might even spot a loggerhead turtle or flying fish along the way. It is a big boat, so it keeps a respectful distance and watches the animals calmly in the wild.

The Shogun Boat, A Classic Wooden Sailing Ship

The Shogun is an old-school wooden ship, so it has a slower, classic sailing feel, not a fast modern catamaran. You sit back on the deck, enjoy the sea air and take in the views. In the off-season the boat is calmer, often with fewer and more mature guests on board, lovely if you like a relaxed pace and a bit more space.

On the picture you can see guests sitting back and relaxing. This is most likely how it looks during the quieter off-season and winter months.
⚠️ Honest Heads Up

In high season the Shogun gets busy and full, with a lively, fun excursion atmosphere. To be real with you, all the big boats running from Puerto Colón and Costa Adeje out to the Los Gigantes cliffs and Masca take a lot of people on board, that is just how these trips work. The Freebird catamaran is another good option, but it also gets very busy in high season.

Lots of people love that buzz. But if you want something quiet, with only a few people and no chance of a louder crowd, a big boat is not the right pick. For families and couples who want a calm, relaxed trip, take a look at the Atlantic Star instead, a smaller boat with a much more peaceful feel.

Lunch And Drinks On The Shogun Boat Trip

A hot lunch is included on the 5-hour trip: fresh salad, rice with vegetables, meatballs in tomato sauce, bread and seasonal fruit. Water and soft drinks are free all trip, and you get beer or wine with your meal. There is a bar on board too, with cocktails for a small extra cost.

What Is On The Lunch Menu
  • Fresh salad.
  • Rice with vegetables.
  • Meatballs in tomato sauce.
  • Bread.
  • Seasonal fruit for dessert.
  • Water and soft drinks free all trip, with beer and wine included at the meal.

Please note the boat can change the menu when needed. We keep this as accurate as we can, but the exact dishes on the day may vary slightly.

We do not show photos of the food on purpose. The boat can change the menu when they need to, and we would rather not set the wrong expectation with a picture that might not match on the day. From what we hear, the food is quite good these days, though as always, some people love it and some do not.

The Shogun Swim Stop, A Favourite Moment

After the whale watching and the sailing, the boat anchors for a swim stop in calm, clear blue water. Jumping off the ship into the ocean is one of the highlights of the whole Shogun boat trip, and it is a hit with young and old alike.

The crew keep an eye on everyone from the boat, but you should be able to swim, this is open ocean, not a small shallow stop. Snorkelling gear is not included. With a lot of people on board, equipment easily gets lost, and to be honest there is not much to see down there anyway. If you really want to snorkel, bring your own. Either way, do not forget your swimwear, this is the moment you will remember.
