Local Experiences In Tenerife
Not the jet ski, not the theme park. This page is the other side of Tenerife: a working banana farm, wine from vines that grow at 1,400 metres, the summit of Spain on foot, flamenco in a village theatre, the laurel forest of Anaga, and the quiet islands next door. Picked by a local team that lives here, with honest notes on each one.

What Counts As A Local Experience In Tenerife?
Let us be honest, because we sell both. Club Canary books jet skis, buggies and theme park tickets every day, and they are great fun. But they are not Tenerife. You could do them in any resort in the world. A local experience is one you can only have here: a farm that still grows the bananas you eat, wine from volcanic soil nobody else has, a path to the highest point in Spain, a theatre full of Canarians on a Friday night, or a whole island where whistling is still a language.
So this is our filter for this page. The experience has to be rooted in the island, run by local people, and leave you knowing Tenerife better than when you arrived. Small groups win over coaches, the north and the mountains win over the resort strip, and we say in every card what it really is, including the two coach tours we kept because they are the honest budget way to see the far corners.
Farm And Food: Taste What The Island Grows
Tenerife is a farming island first. Bananas on the coast, vines on the volcano, potatoes with wrinkly skins. Start here, it is the cheapest way onto this page.
South TenerifeOur Pick
Banana Farm Tour
A real working farm in the south, not a show. A self-guided walk through the plantation, then a tasting of bananas, banana wine and liqueur. Open four days a week, entry at 09:30 sharp, free parking, kids under 5 free. The cheapest and most Canarian hour you can buy on this island, and our first recommendation for families.
North TenerifeEco Farm
Eco Banana Plantation, La Orotava
The north island version, near Puerto de la Cruz: an ecological plantation in La Orotava with a guided hour in English or Spanish, Monday to Friday. New on our list with only one review so far, and we would rather say that than hide it. If you stay in the north, this is your farm.
VilaflorMost Local Afternoon
Wine Tasting In Vilaflor
Tenerife grows wine on volcanic soil at altitudes most of Europe cannot, and the vines survived the plague that killed Europe's old rootstock, so some of these grapes exist nowhere else. About five hours in Vilaflor, one of the highest villages in Spain, up to 8 wines (12 on the VIP option), with a late morning pickup. Four options to choose from, in English and Spanish.
Your Villa
Private Chef In Your Holiday Home
A chef with 25 years on the island cooks a custom multi-course menu in your villa or apartment in the south, including the shopping and the cleanup. Ask for Canarian: papas arrugadas with mojo, local fish, gofio. Groups from 2 to 20, vegetarian and vegan menus are no problem. The best rated card on this page.
Walk The Island: Trails, The Summit, And A Horse
Tenerife has more hiking than beach, which surprises most visitors. The volcano, the laurel forests, the old royal paths between villages. Here are the ways in, from a gentle morning to the roof of Spain.
Guided Hikes
Guided Hiking Tours
Three guided walks with hotel pickup in the south: the Anaga laurel forest on Mondays, the Camino Real, an old royal path between villages, on Wednesdays, and the Teide area on Thursdays. Two to four hours of walking with a local guide who explains what you are looking at. Free cancellation up to 48 hours.
3,715 mThe Bucket List One
Teide Summit Hike, Permit Included
The highest point in Spain, on foot, on an active volcano. The summit permit is strictly limited and sells out months ahead, and this guided hike includes it, legally. Three route options from a 160 metre final climb to the full ascent, pickup from south and north. Honest note: it is cold and the air is thin up there, come with real shoes and a jacket.
Downhill, 39 km
Teide Downhill Bike Tour
Start at 2,180 metres in the national park and roll 39 km down to the coast on paved roads, through pine forest and four climate zones, with a backup vehicle behind you. Four to five hours, ages 8 to 70, bike and gear included. Almost no pedalling, all scenery.
Max 6 Riders
Horse Riding Through The Lava Fields
A slow one. One or two hours on horseback across volcanic trails, and on the two hour ride all the way to the sea. Small groups of six at most, all levels, from 6 years. The island at walking pace, the way it was crossed for centuries.
Culture And Fiesta: Where The Locals Actually Go
Canarians love a party and a show, and most tourists never see either. Two that are worth your evening, and the one week a year the whole island goes mad.
Every FridayLocal Crowd
Tablao Flamenco, Aldea Blanca
Real flamenco in a village theatre on Friday nights, with a welcome drink and free parking. Spanish dance and live flamenco, about 75 minutes, and a crowd that is half local. Not a dinner show and not a hotel lobby act. The cheapest cultural evening on the island.
FebruaryOnce A Year
Santa Cruz Carnival, Main Parade
The second biggest carnival on earth after Rio, and the one night the whole island is in Santa Cruz. The Coso Apoteosis is the main parade, and this trip gets you there and back with pickup in the south and in Puerto de la Cruz, no parking nightmare. The 2027 theme is Roma Eterna. If your dates match, do not miss it.
The Quiet Corners: Anaga, La Laguna, Masca, The North
The resorts are in the dry south. The green, old, lived-in Tenerife is in the north and the west. Two honest ways to get there: a private day with a local driver, or the budget coach.
Private, 1 to 8The Deep Cut
Private North Tenerife Day: Anaga And La Laguna
About eight hours with your own driver guide in a private minibus: the Anaga laurel forest, a UNESCO biosphere reserve older than the volcano, the colonial streets of La Laguna, a World Heritage city, and a lunch stop where locals eat. Up to 8 people, seven languages, pickup in the south, free cancellation up to 96 hours. The most complete local day we sell.
Coach TourBudget Route North
North Tenerife Coach Tour
Honest label: this is a coach, not a secret path. But it is the cheapest way to Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Anaga in one day with a guide, and for solo travellers or families on a budget it beats not going at all. About eight hours, air-conditioned, multilingual.
Also In The Quiet Corners
The private west Tenerife day, six hours, or eight with Teide, from 415€ for up to 3 guests. Masca valley, Garachico, the hidden villages of the west with your own driver.
The island coach tour, once a week, Los Gigantes, Icod, La Orotava and the basilica of Candelaria. From 47€ per adult.
The Teide and Masca coach tour is the classic first-timer day. Busier, but it covers the volcano, Masca, Icod and Garachico for 57€ per adult.
Real Stars: Tenerife Is A Protected Dark Sky
Teide National Park is a Starlight Reserve, one of the best places on the planet to see the night sky, which is why the observatories are here. This is the local experience most people only discover on their last night. Do it on the first.
Max 8 GuestsMost Reviewed
Mount Teide Stargazing, Small Group
Eight guests in a van, a sunset above the clouds, then a Celestron telescope and a guide who knows the sky. Pickup from Costa Adeje, Las Américas and Los Cristianos around sunset, back at the hotel around 22:45. English only. The most reviewed experience on this page, for a reason.
More sky: our stargazing page compares every option, from a self-drive sunset and stars session from 40€ to the dinner version.
The Quieter Islands Next Door
Tenerife is the busy one. La Gomera and La Palma are what the Canaries looked like before tourism, and both are a day trip with your own bed in Tenerife at night.
Ferry + Guide + Lunch130 Reviews
La Gomera Day Trip
Fifty minutes on the ferry to a slower island: the Garajonay laurel forest, and the Silbo, a whistled language still taught in schools and demonstrated at lunch. Around ten hours including a three course lunch with wine, pickup south and north. Prefer a small group? The small group version takes 18 at most, from 149€.
Wed And Fri
La Palma Day Trip
The greenest Canary, and the newest: the Tajogaite volcano erupted in 2021 and you drive past the lava. Early ferry out, evening ferry home, with ferry, bus, guide and lunch included. Wednesdays and Fridays, English and German on Fridays only. Bring your passport or ID, it is a different island.
Golden Hour
Photoshoot With A Local Photographer
Not an experience of the island, but a local one: a photographer who lives here, knows where the light is good an hour before sunset, and delivers 15 to 20 edited photos within ten days. Couples, families, and a maternity version in Dutch, English or Spanish.

Book Local Experiences In Tenerife With A Local Team
Club Canary is a licensed local agency with a real office in Plaza del Duque, Costa Adeje, born on the island in 2019. We are the booking agent, never the operator: every experience on this page is run by a local company we know by name, and we have done most of them ourselves. That is why we can tell you which farm, which hike and which island fits your days, before you pay anything.
Small Deposit, Rest On The Day, Best Price Guarantee
Every price here is the real starting price. Reserve with a small deposit online, pay the rest on the day. And every booking comes with the Club Canary Best Price Guarantee, so there is no reason to shop around.
Eat Like A Local: The Five Things To Order
No booking needed for this part, just a bit of courage with the menu. These are the dishes Canarians actually eat, and where the farm and wine experiences above come from.
Small potatoes boiled in salt water until the skin wrinkles, with red mojo (spicy) and green mojo (coriander). Order them everywhere. Yes, you eat the skin.
Toasted grain flour, the food that fed the island for centuries. In soups, as a dessert mousse, or stirred into milk at breakfast. Ask for gofio escaldado.
Volcanic reds from Tacoronte, whites from the north, and the altitude wines of Vilaflor you taste on the wine tour. Never the house wine from the mainland.
A family home in the north that opens as a restaurant for a few months a year to sell its own wine, with a short menu of what grandma cooks. Mostly around La Orotava and Tacoronte. The most local meal on the island.
The coffee of Tenerife: layers of condensed milk, Licor 43, espresso, frothed milk, lemon peel and cinnamon. Order it after lunch in La Laguna and watch the locals nod.
Smaller, sweeter and spottier than the ones at home, grown on the coast you drive past. The banana farm shows you why it tastes different.
The Eco And Low Impact Picks
Honest line first: no holiday activity is zero impact, and we will not pretend otherwise. But if you care about how you travel, these are the experiences on this page with the lightest footprint and the most money staying local.
The guided hikes and the Teide summit hike. Small groups, marked trails, and guides who explain why you stay on them.
The Teide downhill bike tour. One van up, 39 km of rolling down.
Both banana farms are real producers, and the La Orotava plantation is ecological. Your ticket supports farming, not a show.
Anaga is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, Garajonay on La Gomera is a World Heritage forest, and Teide is a Starlight Reserve. The private north day, the La Gomera trip and the stargazing all go with licensed guides who follow the park rules.
The private chef cooks fully vegetarian or vegan Canarian menus on request. Papas arrugadas, mojo and gofio are vegan by nature, so the island is easier for plant based eaters than it looks.
The coach tours are not glamorous, but one coach to Anaga beats forty hire cars on a mountain road.
Our Honest Advice: Which Local Experience For You?
This is the advice we give across the desk in Costa Adeje every day. Honest, with no sugar on it. Still in doubt? Message us and we will tell you straight.
The banana farm in the morning, a plate of papas arrugadas at lunch. Under 15€ and you have met the island.
The private north day to Anaga and La Laguna if there are three or more of you. The north coach tour if you are solo or on a budget.
The Teide summit hike. Book it before your flights if you can, the permits run out months ahead.
Wine tasting in Vilaflor in the afternoon, Teide stargazing in the evening. Different days, same feeling.
The banana farm, horse riding from 6 years, the downhill bike from 8, and La Gomera for the whistling language. Skip the summit hike until they are teenagers.
Wine tasting, a guachinche in the north on your own, and the private chef for the last night.
Everything on this page except the three coach tours and the La Palma trip is small group or private. We labelled every one of them.
The La Orotava plantation, the hikes, and the carnival pickup from Puerto de la Cruz. The south pickups do not reach you, so check each page.
You have done Teide and the whales. Now La Palma, the Camino Real hike, and a Friday at the tablao.

Local Experiences In Tenerife: Frequently Asked Questions
Quick, honest answers to the questions guests ask us most about seeing the real Tenerife.
What are the best local experiences in Tenerife?
The ones you can only have on this island. Club Canary's shortlist: a working banana farm in the south, wine tasting in Vilaflor on volcanic soil, the Teide summit hike with the permit included, a Friday night at a village tablao flamenco, a private day in the Anaga laurel forest and La Laguna, stargazing in Teide National Park, and a day on La Gomera to hear the whistled language. All of them are run by local companies, and most are small group or private.
How do I experience Tenerife like a local, not a tourist?
Leave the resort strip. The south coast is built for holidays; the real island is in the north, the west and the mountains. Eat papas arrugadas with mojo and drink Tenerife wine instead of imported brands, visit a guachinche (a family home in the north that serves its own wine and food) in La Orotava or Tacoronte, walk in Anaga or on the Camino Real, go to a village fiesta, and see Teide at night rather than from a coach window. Club Canary's local experiences page puts the bookable versions of all of this in one place.
What are some non touristy things to do in Tenerife?
A banana farm visit, a guided hike on the old royal path between villages, the Friday tablao flamenco in Aldea Blanca, a private day in the Anaga mountains and La Laguna, horse riding across the lava fields, the downhill bike ride from Teide to the coast, and a day trip to La Palma or La Gomera. On your own: a guachinche lunch in the north, a barraquito coffee in La Laguna, and the Sunday market in a village rather than the resort shops.
Is Tenerife good for eco friendly or sustainable travel?
Better than its reputation. Tenerife has a national park that is a Starlight Reserve, the Anaga biosphere reserve, and hundreds of kilometres of marked trails. The lowest impact experiences Club Canary offers are the guided hikes, the Teide summit hike, the downhill bike tour, the working banana farms, stargazing with licensed guides, and the small group days in Anaga and on La Gomera. No activity is zero impact, but on these the money stays local and the groups stay small.
What local food should I try in Tenerife?
Papas arrugadas (wrinkled salt potatoes) with red and green mojo, gofio (toasted grain flour, in soup or as a dessert), fresh fish like cherne or vieja, Canarian goat cheese, local bananas, and Tenerife wine from Tacoronte or the altitude vineyards of Vilaflor. For the coffee, order a barraquito. For the full experience, eat at a guachinche in the north or book the private chef for a Canarian menu in your villa.
Can you visit a banana plantation in Tenerife?
Yes, two real ones. The Banana Farm Tour in the south is a working plantation with a self-guided walk and a tasting of bananas, banana wine and liqueur, open four days a week with free parking. The eco banana plantation in La Orotava near Puerto de la Cruz offers a guided hour in English or Spanish, Monday to Friday. Both are cheap, both welcome families, and children under 5 go free.
Can you hike to the top of Mount Teide?
Yes, but only with a permit for the final stretch to the 3,715 metre summit, and those permits are limited and sell out months ahead. The guided Teide summit hike includes the permit legally, with three route options from a short final climb to the full ascent, and pickup from the south and the north. Bring proper shoes and a warm jacket; it is cold and the air is thin up there.
Is there real flamenco in Tenerife?
Yes. The most authentic option is the tablao flamenco in a village theatre in Aldea Blanca every Friday night, with a welcome drink and a crowd that is half local. The Ole Flamenco Show in Costa Adeje is the bigger theatre production on Thursdays. Neither is a dinner show, and both are the real dance, not a hotel lobby act.
What is the best way to see the north of Tenerife?
With a local driver if there are three or more of you: the private north Tenerife day covers the Anaga laurel forest, the World Heritage streets of La Laguna and a lunch stop where locals eat, with pickup in the south. On a budget or travelling solo, the north coach tour does Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Anaga in one day with a guide.
Is it worth doing a day trip to La Gomera or La Palma from Tenerife?
Yes, if you want to see what the Canary Islands looked like before tourism. La Gomera is a 50 minute ferry away, with the Garajonay laurel forest and the Silbo whistled language, and the day trip includes lunch with wine. La Palma is the greenest island and has the newest volcano, Tajogaite, from 2021. Both run as day trips with your own bed in Tenerife at night.
Are these local experiences suitable for families with children?
Most of them. The banana farms are free for children under 5, horse riding takes riders from 6, the downhill bike tour from 8, and the La Gomera day trip is a favourite with kids because of the whistling demonstration. The wine tasting, the flamenco and the Teide summit hike are better for adults and teenagers. Tell Club Canary the ages of your group and we say honestly what fits.
When are the local fiestas in Tenerife?
Carnival fills Santa Cruz in February or early March and is the biggest party of the year. The Romerías, village harvest parades with ox carts and free wine, run from spring into summer, with La Orotava and Los Realejos the big ones. Corpus Christi in June covers the streets of La Orotava with flower and sand carpets. In August the island walks to Candelaria for its patron saint, and on the night of San Andrés in November the people of Icod ride wooden boards down the streets to open the new wine. Ask us what is on during your dates.
Can I do local experiences in Tenerife without a car?
Yes. Most experiences on this page include hotel pickup in the south or meet at a fixed point that is easy to reach: the hikes, the wine tasting, the stargazing, the private north and west days, the coach tours and the island day trips all collect you. The banana farm in the south and the flamenco theatre are a short taxi ride from the resorts. Your e-ticket shows the meeting point or pickup time.
Why book local experiences through Club Canary?
Because we live here and we are neutral. Club Canary is a licensed local booking agent with a real office in Costa Adeje, not the operator, so we recommend the farm, the hike or the island that fits your group rather than the one that pays the most. Every booking comes with real prices, a Best Price Guarantee, a confirmed e-ticket, and a real person to call every day from 08:00 to 22:00.
