Surf in Tenerife
Surfing is not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle that comes with its own set of rules and etiquette. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, understanding these rules is essential to keeping yourself and other surfers safe. This are the general rules between surfers:
- Know the Break
Before paddling out, it’s important to take a few minutes to observe the waves and understand the break. Look for where the waves are breaking, where the current is pulling, and where other surfers are paddling out. This will help you avoid any dangerous areas and ensure that you paddle out to the right spot.
- Respect Priority
Surfing has a priority system that determines who has the right of way on a wave. The surfer closest to the peak of the wave has priority, and other surfers should yield to them. If you’re paddling for a wave and someone else is already riding it, it’s important to yield to them and avoid getting in their way. This helps prevent collisions and keeps everyone safe.
- Don’t Snake
“Snaking” is a surfing term that refers to paddling around another surfer to catch a wave. This is considered disrespectful and can be dangerous, as it can cause collisions or interfere with the other surfer’s ride. If you’re waiting for a wave and someone else is in position to catch it, it’s important to wait your turn and respect their right to catch the wave.
- Stay Out of the Way
As a surfer, it’s your responsibility to stay out of the way of other surfers. This means avoiding cutting in front of someone on a wave or getting in their way when paddling out. If you’re a beginner, it’s especially important to be aware of your surroundings and stay out of the way of more experienced surfers.
- Communicate
Clear communication is essential in surfing, especially when it comes to avoiding collisions or deciding who has priority on a wave. If you’re unsure about what to do in a certain situation, don’t be afraid to ask other surfers for guidance. You can also use hand signals or vocal cues to communicate with other surfers while in the water.
- Respect the Environment
Surfing is a sport that relies heavily on the ocean and its environment. As surfers, it’s important to do our part in preserving the ocean and its ecosystem. This means not littering, avoiding disturbing marine life, and respecting the beach and its surroundings.
By following these basic rules, you’ll not only keep yourself safe, but you’ll also help maintain the respect that is so integral to the surfing community.
